North Korea has Begun Dismantlement of the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site
Quote:After initial reporting of plans to allow experts and media personnel to observe the closing of North Korea’s Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site now scheduled for next week commercial satellite imagery from May 7 provided the first definitive evidence that dismantlement of the test site was already well underway

Did Trump pay them $140 billion yet? Obama set the bar for how much in bribery to pay didn't he?

Why do ears get bigger as we get older? Or do our heads shrink?

I don’t know but Hussein’s got a lot to look forward to if that is the case.

While still good news, is this the site in the mountain that apparently collapsed in on itself because the North Korean's obviously didn't understand geography?

Well, it's more than clear that they're just moving it to a hidden site...likely underground...where it will be immune to any inspection in the coming deal so they can continue to develop and test nukes, right?
That's what many here claimed (without any evidence mind you) Iran was doing under the Obama deal, right?

With good reason with respect to the Iran deal, because inspections are limited ti sites designated by Iran, and there are no surprise inspections. If we implement similar provisions with respect to North Korea, you may certainly expect that criticism from me.

Do you think North Korea will allow unrestricted access to their military sites with no notice?

I don't know. I know Iran did not, and yet that was hailed by many as a robust inspection protocol. If the same thing happens with North Korea, I'm sure all those who hailed the Obama-Kerry-Iran deal will say the same thing about this one. Aren't you? After all, they are honest and honorable people, or so I'm told.
By the way, I won't. I didn't about the Iran deal and I won't about any deal that does not include a truly robust inspection protocol. Te difference is that I don't believe that Donald Trump is as desperate for a deal as Obama and Kerry were. I think Trump sees our BATNA as we blow them to smithereens. I think KJU sees that as his BATNA as well. If he does, we will be fine.

I'm pretty skeptical of anything North Korea says or does. But I also wonder if the main reason they're shutting down large parts of their nuclear program is perhaps because they accidentally killed many of their top nuclear scientists back in September when two tunnels collapsed at Punggye-ri? Reports back then were that perhaps as many as 200 people died in the tunnel collapses. Some were rescue workers but the first accident had to bury some key scientists, you'd have to assume.

Absolutely.
But the evidence shows that North Korea has begun dismantlement of the Punggye-ri site. That is progress.
I did listen to an in-depth lecture on NK yesterday on the way home from work, and the expert kept asking an important question: "What is Kim's end game here? Almost any change will negatively impact him, personally, maybe even kill him. Why is he doing this?"
Sort of reset my expectations a bit.

I think short term, he's just angling to get an injection of foreign aid into NK. He obviously isn't striving for increased living conditions of the people in mass, as once they get the taste of the good life and aren't struggling to survive day-to-day, that's the end of the Kim regime.
To do this, he'll cozy up to South Korea and the west, put on a smile, and make some symbolic concessions until he gets what he wants. He'll then pull back and shy away again. Rinse and repeat every 4 to 6 years.
Personally, I think there's no way he gives up the bomb willingly.
Long term, I think he just wants to maintain his family's control over the country, and eventually have a seat at the Nuclear Powers table.
