There aren't that many alumni here. That's a myth. Maybe %5 of their graduates move here.

They have made strategic decisions to not invest in the medical school, or at least spend more of the medical school money in Knoxville and Nashville. It doesn't produce that many alumni anyway, and most of the people who attend are Memphis and Rhodes undergraduates anyway.

They have a graying fanbase here that doesn't ever get to see them play. The young fanbase are mostly suburbanites/rural fans who are as likely to support Ole Miss or Alabama. When I'm in Ripley, I see as many Alabama fans as UTk. .………

Not to mention. East Tennessee doesn't have the best reputation in Memphis anymore because they want to be stuck in the 1800s.

They had a brand here that they built by playing here.

i live in Newbern and the vol fans are AT LEAST 10 to 1 up here and I’m being very conservative . The fan base has gotten better with the football team doing better but it’s not even close . And I see as many youngsters wearing orange crap as the Greyhairs . Makes me want to puke ?

You see a different world than I do. The UT brand is still strong in this state. Not as dominant as 20 years ago but let football get some real momentum again and the ugly orange shirts and bad tattoos will bloom.

We have exactly one win in FB and I believe UT still has a winning record vs us in BB. They out draw us in both sports in good times and we have not shown to be a fan base that has a lot of resiliency in bad times.

It is a mistake to underestimate their resources or their market penetration. But we also don’t have to defer to them on contract negotiations.

div 1 schools that are closer than utknoxville:Vandy,OleMS,MSState,Auburn,Alabama,Arkansas,Missouri,LSU(and a passel of other louisiana schools) hell knoxville is not even closer than Louisville!
