Most took a PTO day and NC can't fully staff their schools now, how would they fire everyone?

Most employers require a certain number of staff work each day and deny additional requests off when they go below that number. I see no reason why schools should be different. It's these school systems' fault for not standing up to their employees and saying no.

I think the decision to do it on a school day (many counties closed because of this, leaving parents of younger kids stuck making secondary arrangements) will hurt them in the eyes of the general public more than it will help them.

That would matter only if the teachers were doing it "for the children", which they aren't.

It's all about THEM. Always has been, always will be.

Maybe the school systems agree with the teachers?

Can't say I blame them. Wouldn't want to have to ask their county boards to help cough up some more money for teacher pay. Just put that whole burden on the state.

Not all of them. Several had meeting about what to do, with a few remaining open due to already having to make up snow and storm days. Parents applauded, some teachers threw fits that would make a kindergartner proud.

Teachers have to pay $50 in my county if they take a non sick day to help pay the cost of a substitute teacher. School being canceled means they don't have to pay that $50

My nephew and niece go to school in eastern NC and their schools were closed today. Local school board said it was due to safety reasons due to so many teachers being out.

Nothing says "THIS IS ABOUT THE CHILDREN!" more than forcing the children to forgo a day of instruction to protest for benefits to your own checkbook.

RE: Teaches march against NC GOP leadership today....
Educational spending in North Carolina is up two billion dollars since geop took over in 2011. Average teacher salary is up over $8,300 since 2011. Using the GOP pay scale teachers reach their maximum payout in 15 years as opposed to the 32 years it took under the the previous Democratic pay scales.

It was also reported today that there were several busloads of individuals from West Virginia that had been shipped into the teacher rally.

The NC Je on one of their press releases said this was inspired by the Chicago Teachers Union activities and it just wasn't Union like activity but Union activity. Awful interesting since North Carolina doesn't allow unions.
