RE: Off Topic Tornado Warning in CT
I’ve seen a few tornadoes here in Houston but not so much anymore for some reason, been more hurricanes than tornadoes, seen a few water spouts around Galveston too, pretty cool to watch
I once saw a van on fire in Connecticut and boy was it burning it was right off 95, don’t know what was in it but man it was ablazing

That's funny there was a tornado warning in Connecticut. I remember a classmate from Connecticut asking what the tornado siren was the first time he heard them running it for a test.

I hope everyone in CT was ok. I've always been interested to see severe weather coverage in other areas. Do you all have real meteorologists on the news stations like we do here in Oklahoma?

I live in Nashville and most homes don’t have basements, same for Memphis. My grandparents house had one but that is rare.

Oklahoma is not exactly the "South" but nearly all new homes here do not have basements either. Instead people put in underground shelters outside their home or safe rooms within their home.

What is the difference in an underground shelter and a basement? Do you actually have to leave your home and go to a hatch in the yard somewhere for one of these shelters? That seems pretty inconveniently and dangerous if for instance you were awaken in the middle of the night and only had some much time to get to it perhaps from a 2nd story home. They got to connect them to the home right?

No, thats exactly what it is. A basement is a full basement built as part of the foundation of the house. A shelter is something small that is dug in. And yes, you would need to run outside. If you had that little time .. it wouldn't matter whether it was a basement or a shelter. The shelters are actually safer as there is isn't an entire building above you that could fall down plus is completely closed off.

^Exactly right. And no joke about the house collapsing into the basement. I saw a story on tv (probably the weather channel) where a family decided NOT to take shelter in their basement and instead drove away from the tornado in their car (very dangerous). And when they got back to their house it was totally gone and there were two big propane tanks laying in their basement that would have crushed them. Crazy stuff.

I had a friend who worked for the National Weather service. We would go out chasing all the time. The tornados themselves are cool, but the craziest part is how the weather acts right before and around the tornados. Color changes, hail followed by bright skies, just completely random.

Wish we got snow. Its 4 inches of ice here in God's country. Tornados, earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes. The legislature just cut taxes again so I'm sure a volcano or two will make their way from the high tax Hawaii.

With Fracking you got the next best thing to a volcano. Just go in the back yard and light your well water on fire or so I've heard. I'll take 10 inches of snow all day everyday over even a small tornado's BTW. Heck hurricanes move so slow you could ride your bike and still get away from them if you had any sense. I don't stick around for hurricanes, the last 2 small hurricanes we've had I'll go hang out in Boone. Completely avoidable.

I drove through Joplin 6 months after it happened, I never won't to see anything like that and F4's can pop up about anywhere unexpectedly. It's not that but it opened my eyes to the damage and how fast those big tornados can take you out.

To counter this argument ... nearly EVERY time there is a large tornado that does damage .. there is 3-5 days of warning that there will be a severe weather day ahead. You have plenty of time to prepare. They are rarely "unexpected"

I'm aware of Torcon ratings, we get a few high days around here too, but if you left the state every time tornado's were expected that's not very feasible. Where are you going anyway, the threat seems to extend across the entire country for those type of weather systems as they move so it's not like you are getting away from the threat by going anywhere reasonable. Other than staying close to your underground bunker or sleeping in a bunker I don't think there's much preparation you could do.

You can be prepared to go in a basement in the very unlikely event that a tornado hits your house ...

Except most houses in the south dont have basements.

Sounds like poor planning ... lol. In all seriousness, if you live in a tornado prone area, you should have a basement or shelter, or at least a plan of where to get when severe weather is expected.

I had heard them talk about them after the OKC tornado a few years back. The one that went over the same place it had in like 1999 and how many people installed shelters after that storm there. I think they said they cost about 20 grand which is no small amount.

I honestly assumed they would have some sort of connection to the house though. I'd feel pretty uneasy walking out of my house in a storm like that. Don't get me wrong I'd go if I thought a tornado was coming but hail, lighting, flying objects etc. Just seems like they would put it close to the house for those reasons.
