I know opinions can differ on individual articles but to compare Mark’s journalistic abilities to Geoff is like comparing David Wingett to Larry Bird.

I find Mark G superior at conveying information. Calkins sometimes has an annoying and supercilious way of lecturing people on how they should think and act. I can think for myself and draw my own conclusions with sufficient and accurate information. Hence, my regard for Mark G over Calkins

I understand some people are devoted to Calkins and I do not condemn them for what is a matter of taste and preference.

You gotta learn the difference between a columnist and a reporter.

I know the difference and it does not alter my opinion stated above. I draw no value from his insights.

You and others are welcome to enjoy his columns that will resume soon, but I am not in that number.

If Mark G is just going to report the facts like you like he would not be a good columnist, he will likely begin to interject his opinion is his articles as well...That is why there were two different people doing those jobs.

But hey to each his own.

A columnist and a reporter both offer (or should offer) information useful to their readers. However, from my perspective, Calkins is a poor columnist because the form of his information (opinion) is usually worthless to me and he alienates through his sometimes patronizing tone, style and content in print, radio, and customer interaction.

I wish Mark G well in his new role and I think he will be successful. There is room in Memphis for more than one columnist and people appreciating Calkins will soon have their fill of him.

On a larger scale, however, most journalists today write their bias into their work. Instead of presenting a complete set of information, presenting all sides, and allowing the reader to formulate his own opinion, modern journalists dictate what we are supposed to believe; and if the reader disagrees, he is labeled as stupid or a bigot or a racist or whatever. If someone doesn’t believe me, just listen to the Gary Parrish show sometime. In my opinion, journalistic elitism is a major reason why the industry is in such a mess.

Just my opinion.

Bird was an MVP. Geoff has a Pulitzer?
