Surprised to see Merkley that high on the list. Oregon is not nearly so Deep-Blue as a lot of other states.

Gillibrand is a New York liberal so that's not too surprising she tops the list. She's probably bitter for Madam Clinton.

Let's be clear, the entirety of democrat leadership are socialists with the extremist elements being downright Marxist. These days the two terms, democrat and socialist, are synonymous.

Commie, nobody have the right to vote or have freedoms. Putin is a commie by trade.
Democratic Socialists are elected officials who think that everybody should have the same type of home, health care for all and so forth. Many countries in Europe, Canada, Austrailia, Brazil and so forth are Democratic Socialist countries. Trump tends to favor the commies of China, Russia and now North Korea over others. Iran is not a commie state, nor a Democratic Socialist country.

The difference between socialism and communism starts when the emphasis go government programs shifts from providing a safety net to redistributing income and wealth on a massive scale. European Democratic Socialists are all about providing a safety net, not about redistribution. Most of their benefits are not means tested but available to all, and their tax structures tend to be not very "progressive," including a so-called "regressive" consumption tax for something approaching 30% of total government revenues. US Democrats (and communists) lead with redistribution. They want means tested benefits (republicans actually join them on this) and highly "progressive" income taxes.

I favor the safety net approach, but not massive redistribution. Interestingly enough, those countries that do not favor massive redistributionist policies tend to have more equitable dispersions of income and wealth.

You may disagree with where I draw the line. You may have different labels for those who favor a safety net over those who favor redistribution. But what is pretty clear is that European Democratic Socialists favor a safety net, and US Democrats favor redistribution.

I wish republicans would go for a safety net and flat tax approach instead of just being democrat-lite. If they did, I'd become a republican. Hell if democrats did, I'd become a democrat. But democrats are too wedded to, "keep 'em dumb, keep 'em poor, keep 'em dependent on handouts, and they'll keep voting democrat."
