I think Liberty is a pretty big unknown. Will we get the Liberty with a good QB that beat Baylor or will we get the Liberty that lost to Jacksonville State 31-10.

It's Liberty's first home game against an FBS team — a team against whom they'd like to develop a rivalry — and the first game in its expanded stadium (from 19K to 25K, making this almost assuredly their most attended home game ever). A lot of variables make this a super tricky play, even if this WASN'T late May and three months from opening kickoff.

Their coach is Turner Gill its not that tricky. Gill is 66-78 lifetime as a head coach At Buffalo 20-30, at Kansas 5-19 and at Liberty 41-29 with one playoff game. Now lets break his seasons down:

Buffalo:
2006 2-10 (1-7)
2007 5-7 (5-3)
2008 8-6 (5-3) International Bowl (38-20 loss to UConn)
2009 5-7 (3-5)

Kansas:
2010 3-9 (1-7)
2011 2-10 (0-9)

Liberty
2012 6-5 (5-1)
2013 8-4 (4-1)
2014 9-4 (4-1) Playoff loss (at Villanova 29-22)
2015 6-5 (3-3)
2016 6-5 (4-1)
2017 6-5 (2-3)

So even though Gill has a 41-29 record at Liberty when you break it down its all wins over the likes of Gardner Webb, Coastal Carolina (who started football in 2003), Presbyterian (Who is headed to the non-scholarship Pioneer Leage), Monmouth and Kennasaw State (started football in 2015).

If ODU loses this game or its even close in the end then ODU is going to have a looooooooong season.

That last statement is true, even without all the background that you provided. The Monarchs' first five games are Liberty, FIU, Charlotte, VA Tech and East Carolina. Right now (more than three months before the season starts), ODU appears to have a real opportunity to be 4-1 before heading to FAU in October. If they lose to Liberty, every game remaining is in doubt, and yes, it will be a L00000000ng season.

Regarding the close line, Liberty only lost to ODU 21-17 in 2013. That was the year before ODU joined C-USA, and was Turner Gill's 2nd season at Liberty. That game was at ODU btw, and Liberty led 17-7 going into the 4th. Remember, ODU was also only 5-7 (3-5) last year. Since 2013, Liberty is also 4-1 against teams currently in the Sun Belt. Not saying these things necessarily justify the line, mind you. Just trying to bring some other things to light that haven't been mentioned yet, which may be factors.

Try your back up QBs. Nearly every QB was also a punter in HS.

I was just giving background on why this game "should not" be tricky. And that's because of Turner Gill, who is not a good coach or recruiter. He parlayed a 20-30 coaching record into a job with one of the worst if not the worst job in a P5 conference.

In his 4 years at Buffalo he had 1 winning season and that was with QB Drew Willy who was already on the roster when Gill got there. In his lone winning season at Buffalo he won exactly 1 game with the other team having a winning record and that was Ball State that ended the season 12-2. The other closet was Bowling Green at 6-6.

I don't disagree with anything you say and if it this game were taking place at any other point of the season, I'd say that ODU would win handily. But there's an awful lot of intangibles with a team that's having this many firsts converge on the same date. The emotion is going to be through the roof, and while that alone isn't enough to propel a team to victory against a better opponent, it's a hell of a jumping-off point.

Hell, ODU was the beneficiary of it to a degree. Their first FBS game was at East Carolina and they kept with them pretty much the whole way. No, they didn't win, but they made it a lot more competitive than anyone would have imagined. And this was a 10-win ECU team that four weeks later smacked around the same North Carolina team that crushed ODU at the end of the season. So emotion is absolutely going to be a factor, but to what degree is anyone's guess, which is why (for betting entertainment purposes, of course) any play on ODU-Liberty is going to be tricky and quite frankly a game from which I'd stay a million billion miles away.

RE: Week 1 Betting Lines
Personally, I am afraid to ever put money on games that can only be marginally competitive. Yes, FAU is going to have a good team next year, but not to the level of Oklahoma. I expect Oklahoma to break contact around late third quarter and pile on. But here's where it gets hairy - backdoor cover.

This reminds me of the FAU game at Alabama two or three years ago. The spread was around 36 and by early 4th quarter Alabama, essentially, covered it, by going up 40-0. At that point they brought on third stringers and FAU scored a very late TD against them. 40-7. FAU covered. Can things like that be predicted? What if Alabama eased up at 47-0, instead of 40-0? What if FAU said - who cares and brought on their back-ups?

If I am ever to put some money down on a game, I prefer a competitive one.

ODU, please just beat Liberty. We will never hear the end of it. And their board is bad enough...

Yeah. That's a must win for so many reasons. But I got a bad feeling in may but we tend to win those games I get that bad feeling about.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

Yes ODU needs to beat Liberty.

Im afraid OU is going to skull drag FAU. Hurry-up trick play offense is not going to beat or wear down OU. Briles is gone and no Driskel to run the offense. I expect FAU to regress

In Game 1 without Baker Mayfield, and the underdog factor, FAU has a real shot at upsetting OU.

That’s not a bad idea. I’d say there will be a lot of “3rd and long” situations this year. Just have the qb quick kick from the shotgun.
