Student Athlete and Team suffer at hands of bad administration
https://sports.yahoo.com/uplifting-story...17756.html

This is in my neck of the woods so I wanted to share it.

Long story short, the player Alex Postma had mental health issues that baseball helped in overcome. However following the letter of the law, he didn't meet eligibility b/c of the mental health issues effecting his academic performance the previous semester

The player played all season as a pinch runner but one and the day after the last game, the school decided to forfeit all games he was in (all but the final one) and report a self violation. The NCHSAA refused to grant him a retroactive waiver. The player then had his mental health issues spiral due to assuming all the blame for letting his team down and is now struggling to graduate.

Someone at the NCHSAA is trying to get work at the NCAA. A very sad story.

Really hope that the kid can come around and realize that this is not his fault. You should follow the spirit of the law, rather than the black and white on the page. This law was probably written before mental health was given any consideration. The second to worst part is that the kids are the ones that suffer as a result. The worst part is that it is not surprising.

So the principle and athletic director didn't check his eligibility despite the fact he had known problems is one plausible reading.
Another is they knew (and apparently should have known) he had an eligibility issue and made the decision to not apply for a waiver or the decision to not look closer to see if there was an issue needing a waiver.

The bad guys here aren't the state athletics association. It's the two people who had a responsibility to know the eligibility of every athlete and certify to the association that those athletes are in fact eligible.

AD quit saying the job wasn't "fun" any more. Sorry he was having fun rather than doing his job.
