I know what Memorial Day is really about. It was started by former slaves in honor of fallen black Union soldiers who didn’t get a proper burial or recognition for their sacrifice. The government didn’t come up with what we currently think of as Memorial Day until later

Thank you Al Sharpton.

I’m actually highly offended by that comment for several different reasons but this thread isn’t the place.

You chose to make it about race, not me. You cited a completely fictional narrative to support your race driven agenda. Completely Sharptonesque...

Oh yeah, one more thing, happy memorial day.

That is the true origin of Memorial Day. You can call it fiction if you want. Happy Memorial Day to you too

Even SNOPES does not confirm that story. It recognizes the reburying of the black soldier part but not the decoration celebration.

WHAT'S TRUE
In May 1865, free blacks in Charleston reburied dead Union prisoners of war and held a cemetery dedication ceremony.

WHAT'S FALSE
The May 1865 event was not the origin of the modern Memorial Day observance.

Your family would be understandably very proud of you.

Thank you TB. Wrote that a few years back right after my Dad died on the beach watching the sun rise. One of those "moments" for sure.

RE: Remember Monday
The history of the origins of Memorial Day is crowded with variations of who started it, when and where. Even the Confederate ladies of the time were instrumental in beginning such observances.

Regardless, it is a sacred commemoration and belongs to all of America.
