UW/Northwestern at Wrigley in 2020
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/col...story.html

Northwestern hosted Illinois with College Gameday at Wrigley in 2011. The game was played in only one direction. NU then signed a contract with the Cubs to host 5 games at Wrigley but nothing ever came of it until now. Lots of UW alums move to the North Side so NU might be playing a de facto road game. Not as bad as when they sold an Ohio St game to the Cleveland Browns in the early 90s.

Played the game in one direction is all you need to know to determine this is a BAD idea. If a stadium isn't big enough to have a football field, it has no business hosting a football game.

That and IMHO, Wrigley is a crap-hole. Never understood the fascination with it. Good news would be at least it won't be full of Cub fans....

If they used the field placement that the Bears used for years, going one direction isn't an issue but they opted for an alignment that provided the better viewing angles.

Wrigley is far from a crap hole and post-renovation even further away but then again you signaled that you weren't trying to give an honest statement.

I was being honest, hence the IMHO statement.

It is my opinion that Wrigley is a rat infested crap hole. You're entitled to a different opinion but just because mine doesn't agree with yours doesn't make it any less honest.

Still, doesn't change the fact that if NW wishes to hold a game not in Evanston, there are better choices.

With the filled with Cubs fan comment, sure doesn't sound honest.

3rd base seats are now retractable so it won’t be one-direction like 2011.

Why? You can play at home, in a stadium with 47,000 capacity that was designed for football or you can play 9 miles away in a stadium with 40,000 capacity (maybe 10,000 with decent seats) designed for baseball.

Though it wouldn't shock me to find out some sponsor is making it more lucrative for whatever purpose.

Promoters offered Arkansas State $1.5 million guaranteed plus a percentage of ticket revenue to move a home game vs Mizzou to Busch Stadium.

My guess is it is a chance to inflate the ticket prices and do some signage deals that aren't part of the normal home game package.

Also, last year Northwestern announced they're playing one game at Wrigley for each of the 2022, 2024 and 2026 seasons.

I resent the idea of Northwestern being Chicago's Big Ten team. Illinois should be. Northwestern wants to be Chicago's Big Ten team? When most of the top Chicago suburb high school students apply there they get a big fat rejection letter from them and those that make the cut they ask for a ridiculous amount in tuition. If you take the number of alumni from each Big Ten school living in the Chicago area, Northwestern would not only be way behind Illinois, I don't even thing they'd be in the top half. I believe at one point they were dead last but that was before the recent adds.

Illinois should play more games in Chicago to mark their territory. When I was at U of I, I knew tons of people from the Chicago suburbs.

The rest of the conference can do as they wish -- as long as RU doesn't have any more Yankee Stadium games.

That was a fun game to watch. I also completely understand why some could not stand watching.

Northwestern will never really be Chicago's Big Ten team, but if you're in the Wildcat athletic department can you blame them for trying? And while U of I should probably keep trying to expand in Chicago, it's inefficient spend for now when so many Chicago area grads went to other Big Ten schools (college-bound students from Illinois go out-of-state at the second-highest rate in the nation) and Illini football has mostly been mediocre. Victory cures everything though, so if Lovie starts winning eight or so games a year they'll make some inroads.

This is a decent marketing gimmick by NU. It's not like they're a G5 school with only five home games a year, they have three non-conference home games this upcoming season so if you wanna see them play in Evanston you have plenty of chances. Having a Wrigley game is a good way to attract local or out-of-town alums of other Big Ten teams who might not be interested in an away game against NU, and give your fans an interesting experience to boot. And I wouldn't be surprised if the deal includes some Cubs marketing tie-ins (in-stadium ads, ticket giveaways, etc).
