So a possible lineup of:

C - Donaldson
1B - Slater
2B - Guidry
SS - Edwards (JuCo transfer, .347, 3 HR, 18 SB) or Storme Cooper
3B - McGillis
LF - Montenegro
CF - Franklin or Wallner
RF - Wallner or Blaylock
DH - Wallner or Blaylock

SP:
Friday - Powers
Saturday - Powell
Sunday/midweek - Carroll, Strickland, Colt Smith, Warren (JuCo transfer)

If Powers is our ace next year, we're in deep ****.

Powers and Powell are adequate against the directional schools and snowbirds we play against in the regular season, but get shelled against teams that are actually good (like Arkansas and DBU).

Gotta hope Wallner can improve his secondary stuff and that Warren can come in and impress in the fall.

I think Guidry should lead off. One of our best 3 hitters and a high OBP guy. Speed in a leadoff man is overrated imo.

Agreed. OBP and bat handling is most important. Put Franklin in the 9 hole to cause mayhem when the top comes up to bat.

I completely disagree....IIRC, his OBP was 5/6 by the end of the year.....

however, I could live with him in the 9.....it should be one or the other...

I like him in the 1 simply b/c his slugging % is dogshite......it makes no sense when you get into a run deep in the order with men on base at that point...

toss in his ability to being able to bunt for hit, SB, hit and run, take pitches early, etc.....I put him in the 1 slot all day long....

as always, JMO....

Slater can’t play first or left. I doubt third is in the cards. Probably had the worst defensive season we’ve had from a first baseman.

In all fairness, most of his defensive problems came from having to dig out Boyd’s throws.

What do they like about Carroll? Invited to Cape Cod, they see something. I also see Colt being the ace. He was solid last year. I also like Weirich if he gets his velocity up as he matures but nobody talks about him.

I think Carroll has the stuff to be a good pitcher. Seemed like most of his issues were mental and maybe just needs more reps this summer and fall.

I'd like to be optimistic about Smith but two things concern me: Will his arm be healthy enough to even pitch again? If so, will he be back to what he was before? I would bet his last time to throw a baseball has been a long time ago.

I liked what I saw from Weirich early on. Not really sure what happened there but we need some young talent to produce if we want to be successful.

And a name I left off as a possible starter is Matt Wallner. Granted I don't know if that is a possibility but considering it worked for Sandlin last year there's a chance. Wallner isn't a Sandlin i realize but with some work he could become a viable option if needed.

I thought Slater was much better defensively down the stretch. Not nearly as many screw-ups in the 2nd half of the year.

I put Colt in the same category as Powers and Powell. Decent enough against our usual schedule of snowbirds and directional schools, but will get hit hard when we play teams that are worth a damn in the postseason. Look at what happened against State in the regional.

I realize he made a few Friday starts for us in 2017, but he wasn’t the anchor of that staff. He had two Day 2 draft picks that pitched after him on Saturday and Sunday.

I’m with you on Carroll. Think he has high upside.... if he returns to the team in 2019.

McCarty and Sandlin both improved their junior years after spending a summer in Cape Cod. Maybe Carroll can do the same?

I think they’re going to give Wallner a shot to crack the rotation. Sounds like they wanted to do that this year but he just didn’t have the reps in the fall and they were worried about his hip.

It’s gonna be really interesting to see if the USA team uses him on the mound. Pitching coach for the USA CNT is Brian O’Connor (UVA HC). That guy is a top 3 coach in college baseball. Maybe he can work his magic with Wallner. He could be our Brendan McKay.

Had TJ surgery last July, so figure he would be on a pitch count in the fall. Could be a middle relief or situational guy for us in 2019 but probably projects as a starter down the line.
