I thought Slater was much better defensively down the stretch. Not nearly as many screw-ups in the 2nd half of the year.

I put Colt in the same category as Powers and Powell. Decent enough against our usual schedule of snowbirds and directional schools, but will get hit hard when we play teams that are worth a damn in the postseason. Look at what happened against State in the regional.

I realize he made a few Friday starts for us in 2017, but he wasn’t the anchor of that staff. He had two Day 2 draft picks that pitched after him on Saturday and Sunday.

I think Carroll has the stuff to be a good pitcher. Seemed like most of his issues were mental and maybe just needs more reps this summer and fall.

I'd like to be optimistic about Smith but two things concern me: Will his arm be healthy enough to even pitch again? If so, will he be back to what he was before? I would bet his last time to throw a baseball has been a long time ago.

I liked what I saw from Weirich early on. Not really sure what happened there but we need some young talent to produce if we want to be successful.

I’m with you on Carroll. Think he has high upside.... if he returns to the team in 2019.

McCarty and Sandlin both improved their junior years after spending a summer in Cape Cod. Maybe Carroll can do the same?

C - Donaldson
1B - Slater
2B - Guidry
SS - Edwards (JuCo transfer, .347, 3 HR, 18 SB) or Storme Cooper
3B - McGillis
LF - Montenegro
CF - Franklin or Wallner
RF - Wallner or Blaylock
DH - Wallner or Blaylock

SP:
Friday - Powers
Saturday - Powell
Sunday/midweek - Carroll, Strickland, Colt Smith, Warren (JuCo transfer)

And a name I left off as a possible starter is Matt Wallner. Granted I don't know if that is a possibility but considering it worked for Sandlin last year there's a chance. Wallner isn't a Sandlin i realize but with some work he could become a viable option if needed.

I think they’re going to give Wallner a shot to crack the rotation. Sounds like they wanted to do that this year but he just didn’t have the reps in the fall and they were worried about his hip.

It’s gonna be really interesting to see if the USA team uses him on the mound. Pitching coach for the USA CNT is Brian O’Connor (UVA HC). That guy is a top 3 coach in college baseball. Maybe he can work his magic with Wallner. He could be our Brendan McKay.

Had TJ surgery last July, so figure he would be on a pitch count in the fall. Could be a middle relief or situational guy for us in 2019 but probably projects as a starter down the line.

have you ever met Drew.....he's a monster closer in my book...

nobody saw Colt this year......an off season at that age and your 'balls' might drop a bit more....

and TJ isn't as concerning as it once was....

let's not get to far ahead of ourselves.....

Colt and Drew are going to be very interesting how they are utilized moving forward....

Well, here are a few more names to watch at MTSU — Tennessee Tech’s Matt Bragga, College of Charleston assistant and former Liberty head coach Jim Toman, Auburn pitching coach Steve Smith, Southern Miss assistant Chad Caillet and, of course, still Serrano.

Forgot to put this in the original post re: NCAA allowing 2 fall exhibitions

https://hubcityspokes.com/sports-slidesh...sms-record

“Oh, yeah. We’ll play,” Berry said. “I don’t know who we’ll play yet, but we’ll work that out this summer. I would think we’d probably play one here and one on the road. I wish we could play four. That’s what we wanted, but they only gave us two. Two is better than none, so I think it’s a great thing for our sport moving forward and how we’re trying to get our guys ready, as well as other programs, for the upcoming spring.”

per Kendall Rogers twitter this morning:

SEC is putting forth legislation to add a 3rd full time paid assistant for baseball and softball. Currently there's only 2 full time assistants (Caillet and Ostrander) along with a volunteer assistant (Vollmuth). There's the possibility for it to be submitted by September and voted on in Spring of 2019. If approved it will be for all of D1.

Hope that works out for them. He was pretty average before this year.

They were pretty good last year too but I certainly get your point.

I’m not going to fault him for his teams early on in his tenure at TN Tech since he was building the program but the dip a few years back is certainly concerning.

That said, I prefer him to some of the assistants that were being floated.

I think Bragga is a better option than Berkman and some of the other guys that were rumored. But I would have picked Riser over Bragga.

Too bad Saarloos pulled his name out of his consideration. Really think he would have won big at Rice. Guess he’s waiting on the CSF job.

Well he's had close to 200 wins in the last five seasons, so not terrible.

And this year he had 8 guys drafted (crazy). So he either recruits extremely well, he knows how to develop a player, or both.

RE: 2018-19 offseason baseball thread
part baseball/part other non revenue sports related:

Was doing my usual browsing of other boards to see what's being said and saw on UAB's board where a "gold card" that they are selling for this upcoming season is $65 and it's essentially a single season ticket that allows you into the following sports: men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball and women's basketball.

Baseball is too much of a money maker here to do something that cheap as our baseball season tickets this past year started at $200 for general public and from what I remember I think we were around 1800 or so season tickets. Along with UAB's baseball attendance averaging around 250-400 a game there's a reason why it's not considered a money maker for them.

If baseball makes money here (and I doubt it does), it is a marginal profit.

Looks like MTSU is possibly close to hiring their new coach but still nothing official:

https://www.murfreesboropost.com/sports/...89780.html

Former Liberty University head baseball coach Jim Toman has emerged as strong candidate to succeed Jim McGuire at MTSU.

Toman was a highly successful head coach at Liberty, amassing 329 victories in nine seasons. He also had 24 players selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Toman abruptly resigned after a highly-successful season at Liberty and spent last season as the head assistant and recruiting coordinator at College of Charleston. Liberty won at least 30 games in each of Toman’s of nine seasons.

seems like he would be a good get for MTSU:
http://www.newsadvance.com/sports/libert...f019d.html

he spent 11 seasons (1997-2007) as Ray Tanner’s top assistant with the Gamecocks.
Toman was widely considered one of the top recruiters in the country during his time at USC.

RE: 2018-19 offseason baseball thread
Saw where Sandlin made his debut for the Indians' rookie league team.

I know a lot of this just has to do with timing/circumstances but it seems a little strange that he's starting off with their rookie team and not A ball. The Indians started McCarty off with their short-A club last year.

Reynolds hasn't been assigned.

Was curious about other alums:

Cody Carroll and Conor Fisk are pitching well in what appear to be short relief roles in AAA ball. Carroll is a good prospect but I'm hoping that he doesn't fall into the same trap Jarrett Hoffpauir did years back and end up successful at the AAA level but stuck there because the big club is so good and organization, as a whole, is so deep. Fisk has a below-1 WHIP in the Jays' organization.

Mason Robbins is hitting .294 in AAA....but still not hitting for power or drawing walks. I'm a little surprised the White Sox have kept him around for so long but it looks like this has been his best season so far.

Scott Copeland was picked up by the Mets. Got to throw a game in the majors this year but bounced back down to AA after one game and not throwing particularly well.

Roney is still on the DL. Not sure if he had surgery, or what.

Looks like everyone else (Burdeaux, Braley, Lynch, McCarty, Robinson) is struggling in A-ball. Did I miss anyone?
