9 years of Scott Berry.... Are you satisfied?
After 9 seasons, I feel like we have a pretty good grasp on Berry's ability to lead this program. I think we've seen the ceiling. It's not bad, it's just nothing special.

Pros:
-Worst conference finish was t-3rd.
-A couple CUSA titles in both regular season and tournament.
-Hosted a Regional in 2017. 2nd ever in school history.
-He's cheap. I think we could attract a better coach, but honestly I don't think we'd be will to pay what that would take.

Cons:
-He has a postseason record of just 5-10.
-He only made the Regional finals once, and the preceded to lose 2 consecutive games at home.

Neutral
-Made the NCAA tournament 5 out of 9 season. This isn't bad enough to be listed as a con, but I feel we should be in the post season more than 55% of the time for it to be a pro.
-We seem to be pretty reliant on transfer players. That's not necessarily bad, but it certainly could blow up in any given season.

I think Berry will always keep us respectable in conference play, but I think it would take a lot pieces falling into place for him to lead an Omaha run. I think he's just very average.

We lose every year in the post-season because of our pitching. Why can't Berry recruit MORE good pitchers? That's been his achilles heel since Corky retired.

I tend to agree with you on this Bleacher.

Berry is not bad and we certainly could do worse. He's done absolutely nothing to warrant firing him and he's kept our program very respectable. However, we just don't seem to be able to really move forward. He is cheap and we won't attract a better coach unless we pony up some jingle. I would think he's done enough to get offers from bigger programs, but I don't know if he has any interest in leaving. That's the only acceptable option for his departure at this point.

Like you said... It's not bad, It's just nothing special.

Hopefully my response doesn't create a whole new conversation but all I can think is "if" USM goes in a different direction ( aka Jeff Bower 05-stirthepot) and i'm in no way saying I'm against Berry, but could this turn into an eLLLLLLLLLLLLos situation 03-puke all over

Chicago - Maxwell Street

I think we’ve hit our ceiling with Berry. We won’t win a Regional with him at the helm. Just don’t have the talent prepared for that. We play a creampuff schedule every year. Guess it just depends on the expectations you want to place upon our program as to whether you judge him a success or not. If making a regional is success, then he’s the best man for the job. If we want more, we’ll have to pull a Bower, however unpopular that may be.

Personally, I’m tired of low tier programs having better overall pitching than us. That’s unacceptable.

To expand on this. He has never won a losers bracket game. When it's win or go home, we go home. Every. Single. Time! That's more than a talent issue. That's coaching.

He did win his first attempt at a loser's bracket game

2010 Auburn Regional (1-2)
Lost to Clemson
Beat Jacksonville St
Lost to Auburn

2011 Georgia Tech Regional (0-2)
2016 Florida State Regional (1-2) won, lost, lost
2017 Southern Miss Regional (2-2) won, won, lost, lost
2018 Arkansas Regional (1-2) won, lost, lost

It's definitely closer to con than pro, but I really feel like we got shafted in 2015. That would have given Berry 6 out of 9 which I think would be a pro. Thus, I just left it neutral.

RE: 9 years of Scott Berry.... Are you satisfied?
My problem with this: If you are not satisfied with Berry, you have to at least acknowledge that your standard for the program exceeds what our program has proven it is capable of.

To me, you cannot extol our "Tradition of Excellence" (that billboard is the most "mid-major" thing ever) while saying that you aren't happy with Berry. Our postseason "tradition" is going 1-2 in a regional and getting our brains beaten in by SEC teams (see my post from the Arkansas thread). That was Corky Palmer's career until the team went on a crazy run after he announced his retirement.

Am I satisfied with Berry's overall resume/numbers? No. I don't think that's the right question, though. To me, the better question is if you are satisfied with where the program is now? I would say yes. The program is trending upward. After three **** years, Berry has at least re-established Corky Palmer-type consistency. I'm content giving him a few years to see if the progress continues and he can get over this hump.

Not that this matters, all. He got an extension after missing three straight regionals. If you think there's a snowball's chance in hell he would get fired in the next decade, you've got a good drug dealer.

RE: 9 years of Scott Berry.... Are you satisfied?
maybe the better question is what in the hades you guys expect and be able to explain why....

bbcor torched him during the lull period....how many super's have we ever made and advanced.....that'd be one each in '09.......whooody whooooo....

just wow to all this stupid bs.....

he easily achieves expectations year in, year out.....

fwiw, it's a collegiate sport that basically nobody really gives a shite about.....AND a non revenue sport (it doesn't matter whether you like that FACT or not)

how many people are calling for Weeks' head......bet you don't even know who that is......

some of y'all are some whiny arse goobers....

edit: why he didn't save Sandlin is still an enigma after knowing arky won.....then leaving in Powers to give up 7 was unforgivable.....

but whatever.....water under at this point......our pen sucked this year and we didn't hit the ball......

Berry's "success" is based by and large on results in the helpless women and children's conference. You have to look elsewhere for success, and there ain't much.

Nobody, because he retired at the end of the spring golf season.

Back to your regularly scheduled nonsensical rambling.

I like coach Oz. I think his coaching and recruiting will help with pitching results next year. I think this was a smart hire by Berry.

Except that somebody did know who Coach Weeks is- but apparently you don’t keep up enough to use his present status in any sort of proper context. Kinda makes your drivel that more inane. Who’d have thought that was possible?
