After reading and listening to the article linked below I have a greater understanding of what Mendenhall meant when he said this:

Quote:“What I’ve learned in the world of college football and through the world of reporting is if all areas of the world and all topics are reported on as they are in sport, I would question the authenticity and sincerity and accuracy.”

The original articles are the work of a beat writer with an agenda.

In regards to wanting to play the bottom of P5 OOC

Quote:Streaking the Lawn had the opportunity to listen to an audio recording of the meeting itself. Multiple writers and editors for this site reviewed the recording. None came away with the same impression left by Blum’s earlier posts.

The most glaring omission in those posts concerned Mendenhall’s statements about wanting to “play the worst power-five team” that UVA can schedule.

Responding to a Board member’s question about scheduling philosophy, Mendenhall began by relaying the mood in the room during his first team meeting in 2016. The players were “despondent and dejected,” with many of the best players “on the verge of quitting,” after a 4-8 campaign that included blowout losses at UCLA and home against Boise State.

Mendenhall then said that scheduling is part of the “consecutive, sequential process” to building sustained success at UVA. Winning the out-of-conference games results in “building capability and momentum” into the ACC schedule.

Many of those ACC teams are a step ahead of Virginia currently. Which is why getting wins in the first four games is so important to Mendenhall. “While you learn to win, you actually increase chances to win,” the coach told the Board. “And the culture starts to build along the way.”

In regards to the number of ACC-level players

Quote:The current 81-man roster does not account for the outgoing senior class that included two NFL Draft picks and another first-team All-ACC performer. It also does not include any of the three incoming transfers with Big Ten backgrounds, nor does it include 17 members of the incoming freshman class—10 of whom have a 247 Sports Composite rating of 84 or higher.

At the link is a recording of the full audio of Mendenhall's talk with the BOV. It's nowhere near as dire as the beat writer is trying to make it out to be.

Somewhere along the way the journalism profession has lost it's focus and instead of reporting a story they are trying to create one. Slanted garbage articles like this are a huge reason why the level of trust the people have in the media is as low as is it these days.

Exactly right. This new journalist has also managed to lose all respect from our basketball national coach of the year and our 2015 national champion baseball coach. You can add our football coach to the journalist's enemies list.
It is clear that our new pro-football AD and the University Board all were pleased with coach Mendenhall's realistic but serious plan to rebuild the program. I find it refreshing. As much as I admired the previous coach's morals and sincerity, he didn't know how to win. But this coach seems to really know what it takes to win without sacrificing other UVa values. I think most of the fans and the team members themselves appreciate it.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that this Virginia team did win 3 conference games this season with that weak roster.

Their wins include the worst team in the conference (UNC), plus two teams that finished around .500 in Duke & GT. Sure, they started 5-1, but the win at Boise State looks more like an outlier when you look at their season in total. They beat three teams in the bottom half of the league, plus W&M and UConn.

They got waxed at home by BC on their own homecoming, lost to a bad Pitt team, gave up 30 unanswered points to lose to Miami, got shut out at home against their in-state rival, and got embarrassed in their bowl game by Navy where they posted a pathetic 175 yards of offense and only scored on a kick return.

I can't believe that people are actually defending UVA in this thread, despite whatever slant a local beat writer might have against the team.

I'm going to credit that Boise State win to Mendenhall's experience coaching against them - not a fluke, just a favorable match-up of coaches. That said, UVA has a long row to hoe...

Considering that there's only been two people, myself and cavman, who have questioned the article based on the narrative the beat writer tried to push in comparison to how the information was actually presented in the audio recording and absolutely no defense of UVA as a football program I question your level of reading comprehension.

I think Mendenhal is finally becoming aware of the fact that football isn't a priority at UVA, something we have known for a long time, and is doing his level best to try and correct that. Much like UNC & NC State there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that a public school of that size and with that level of resources located in a talent rich state should be as bad for as long as UVA has. I like Bronco and think he's one of the better coaches in college football but it remains to be seen if he can work an absolute miracle and turn around the French football program.
