Exactly. I get that he paid some light bills and did some community things. Jacob Karam did too. After a while, Z-bo becomes a footnote in history, with no actual chapter. "He's Memphis." pfft

Penny, Finch, Lawler should be obvious. It's the 4th slot. I'd go with McCarver.

If you are talking about the CITY OF MEMPHIS then you must include Vernon Bell and Bud Dudley. As both have left a bigger finger print on the city of Memphis Sport community long term than any one else.

If we are going to down that road then some might argue that Fred Smith has done more than both combined.

Good thing we don't have mountains around here.

Did they dig up Forrest and his wife? Surprised that wasn’t mentioned in the statute removal process.

Penny has to be in.
Middlecoff has to be in. His accomplishments in golf were outstanding, but little known by the 'younger' folks on this board.
DeAngelo should be in.
Keith Lee should be in.
Harry Schuh is a possible I have not seen mentioned. All-American OL, 1st round draft pick, All Pro OL multiple times.

McCarver a maybe. He is really more well known for his color commentary on MLB than his actual playing career.

I really don't even think of the owners and coaches when I think of Memphis Sports, but you must give Fred Smith credit for so much of what we have here. And Pitt Hyde, and Mike Rose as well.

Just a little bit of my drivel to think about. :)

I couldn't even begin to narrow it down to 4. There are some very worthy people who would be left out no matter who was picked.

McCarver played in 4 decades and won 2 World Series.

2. Jerry Lawler. If we are saying 'rasslin is a a sport.
3. Penny.
4. Mike Heisley. No Heisley, no Grizz, and probably no big 3 sports team ever in Memphis.

Any list that doesn't include Larry Finch cannot be taken seriously.

I hear you. But I looked at who impacted Memphis and and had impact nationally, outside of Memphis.

Middlecoff, Lawler and Penny all very well known outside of Memphis in their prime. Not sure Finch was, never had sustained success recruiting outside of Memphis. I lived in Texas for 13 years, everyone knew Penny and Lawler, but very few knew who Larry Finch was. No impact as a pro player, and he never got a sniff at a decent job after Memphis fired him. Also didn't want to repeat sports, and Penny had the Tiger hoops spot.

You just had to be there. Larry hands down.

Many of these are high profile names, but being a name should not be enough for HoF admission.

Sadly people concept of history only goes back as far as their ability to remember personally.

Just because people are fans of named stars does not make them HoF materials. Half of the Tigers mention would not make it in HoF with in the first 20 years. So no way in the world they should be on a local Mt Rushmore

You have to look at the long term impact a person has on the Memphis Sports Community. Who has had the biggest impact LONG TERM on Memphis Sports Scene.

I like the Harry Schuh suggestion. Recency bias or age might not give him his due, but he was a hell of a player that had a amazing career.

RE: Memphis Sports "Mt. Rushmore"
Finch is number one and is probably the only guy who can't be questioned. As much as anyone responsible for defining Tiger basketball, both as a player and a coach.

Lawler: Do we count wrestling as a sport? Then he's a no brainer to be in too. But are we really talking about pro wrestling here? I say yes, but I can see the argument otherwise.

Penny: Had a good college career and a middling NBA career because of injuries. Coached some HS ball, and hasn't coached a day as college coach yet. I ain't saying he doesn't get there. Heck he may top Finch some day. But today? A must have to be in? I don't buy it. Keith Lee has better resume imo, and I think Lorenzon Wright needs to at least be looked at too if we're talking Tiger's basketball players.

DeAngelo: Probably the only football player that could really qualify. This wasn't his fault, but he'd be a no brainer over Penny (today) if we'd sustained success through the later West/Porter years to today rather than what happened.

Z-Bo: I mean, I see what people are saying with the lack of accolades. It's the same argument against retiring his jersey or whatever But in my opinion you have to have a member of the Grit and Grind Grizzlies, probably one of the great, if not the greatest, eras in Memphis sports history, in here, and it has to be a pick between Z-Bo and TA since they're the two guys who embodied the era more than anyone. And if have to pick one, it's going to be Z-Bo

So Finch, Lawler, Z-Bo, and Keith Lee are probably who I pick. Put Penny in there if you don't like wrasslin. Either way Penny's probably knocking someone off soon assuming things go well over the next 5 years or so.
