Report: American Athletic Conference revenue fell by six percent in 2016-17
The American Conference saw revenue drop by six percent in 2016-17, according to a report from The Orlando Sentinel.

The conference saw $74.47 million in total revenue, down from $79.297 million in 2015-16. It was the first decline in revenue for the league since the year after Louisville and Rutgers left the American (2014-15). Documents obtained by The Sentinel showed that the American earned $42.179 million from postseason tournaments and more than $20 million from television and radio rights deals.

Revenue will be a big factor for the conference as it begins negotiations for a new television deal following the 2018-19 season, commissioner Mike Aresco told SportsDay during the AAC's annual meetings last month.

"That's going to be tricky with all the new platforms, all the new ways people want to use your product. You gotta make sure you have a good balance of revenue and exposure but revenue is critical for us," Aresco said before explaining why he believes the American is in better shape than it was during the last round of negotiations. "Our TV deal was an accident of history. It happened just as we were in complete disarray. You needed an index card to figure out who was in or out. That's the worst time to work out a TV deal. But now it's not even close."

Considering that the Big 12 was the lowest-earning Power Five league with $371 million in revenue during the same time period, it shows how critical that television deal will be to the American's "Power Six" campaign.

"I think we're firing on all cylinders but we still have a lot of work to do because we really want to be in that P6. People still don't buy that idea that we're going to do it or it's possible but we're a lot closer than people think and it's not that far off," Aresco said in May. "You've seen what our top teams can do. They can play with anyone. So I think the future's bright. I think the question for us is going to be the TV deal."

Yeah the downtick for 2016-2017 looks awfully close to $4million.
Like that was one of those crazy, rare, anomalous seasons where a G4 steals the NY6 bowl bid.

Yup. I think its actually 6 million. 4 Million is for appearing in the bowl + a contractual 2 million payment to defer expenses.

Mark Packer and his Sirius XM show used his article to absolutely rail on the P6 narrative and how this should be a wake up call to the conference to get with the program. He’s such a P5 homer it’s disgusting. One of his callers actually recommended that the G5 lump all their product together and sell media rights as a whole.

I say If we are getting people this worked up we are doing something right.

how about half the mid-major power teams go to G4 status?

I keep deleting my posts So Frustrating.
Good Evening Conference Mates,

Identity and Stability
Identity: Army, Air Force, P6 drum. So many people hate us on Twitter, Podcasts, facebook, Sirius, sports articles. This was expected. Stick to your guns. As American Conference Fans, we all know what it is like day to day.

Stability: GOR

The Why? Immediate separation to secure the future of the American as a strong Power Conference.
Aim for 15m, instead of 6 to 8, and prove to our sponsors, media and business partners that we are a strong brand.

15 year GOR, 15 mill per Full Team. that is not crazy, it is called protection of your brand for Amazon or Netflix, or NBC.

As a matter of fact that same caller mentioned above, which I will assume was an Alabama fan based on some comments he made, also pointed out that half the power conference wouldn't have a shot at the playoff anyway even with 10, 11, or 12 wins just based on the eye test. Packer didn't disagree.
