Correct. Only a possibility for a Liberty Bowl slot if our champ doesn't make the NY6. And that in itself is still only a possibility.
If that is true then hopefully it wouldn't be counted as one of the 7 contracted bowls that the AAC is allowed under the new bowl allowance rules. Then it would give the AAC 8 bowls for it's bowl line up.
Access / Liberty / Plus 7 more bowl contracts.
Additional 7 Bowls:
1. Military - ACC
2. Birmingham - SEC
3. St Pete - ACC
4. Armed Forces Bowl - B-12
5. Independence Bowl - SEC or ACC
6. Heart of Dallas - B-10
7. Cure Bowl (CUSA) / New Orleans Bowl (SB) / Hawaii Bowl (MWC / BYU) as Rotation Bowls.
I expect a lot of arm twisting to be going on period. The A5 will be changing for a couple bowls meaning it will slide other bowls down the totem. At a certain point our number two team is better than the 4/5/6 option of B12, SEC, etc.
With UCF and Houston showing well at the NY6 I really think a conditional tie in for the Peach and/or Cotton is a real possibility. That means 4/5 years our champ is going for sure to a NY6. With all the shake ups the Liberty bowl might consider a non-auto qualifying champ 1/5 and what has traditionally been a strong runner up a better option then the later picks the A5 will have.
Our second best team the 5 years of existence
2017: #21 Memphis 10-2 or #23 USF 9-2
2016: #19 USF 11-1 or 9-5 Navy/10-3 Tulsa
2015: #18 Navy 10-2 or Temple 10-4
2014: Cincinatti 9-3 or UCF 9-3
2013: #15 Louisville 11-1 or Cincinatti 9-3
Four out of five years and the entire three years since we have split into divisions the second best team has been ranked. Since divisions they have also been double digits win teams, excluding Louisville the other two years have been nine win teams.
