2019 will be final season for FSU's Martin
http://seminoles.com/mike-martin-to-retu...al-season/

Quote:Florida State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox announced Monday that head baseball coach Mike Martin will return for his 40th and final season in 2019.

Martin became college baseball’s all-time wins leader in May and enters the 2019 campaign 13 victories shy of 2,000 for his career. With a 1,987-713-4 record since 1980, Martin’s .736 win percentage is the best among active college coaches and he has led Florida State to the NCAA Tournament and won at least 40 games in all 39 years at the helm of the Seminole program.

In Mike Martin's first year I was living close by and went to see the Noles play Troy which was coached by Chase Riddle's (his second year there). F.S.U. was ranked 7th at the time and Troy took the game. Little did I know he would still be the F.S.U. coach after I retired. I think that Troy team made it all the way to the CWS that season and it was a heckuva ball game.

It's odd that it was announced by Florida State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox and not Martin himself.
Makes you wonder who made the decision.

I don't claim to follow the baseball program closely, but the way the post season ended, with a universally panned blunder, a potentially a program-damaging decision by Martin, made this inevitable. I don't know if Martin himself was ready to put a date on it, but continuing open ended was simply not an option. The idea of taking it year to year for a few more years was totally untenable.

I would expect the only choice he was given was one more season or zero more seasons.

It's a move a lot of, if not most, of the baseball fans have been calling for. From what I understand, FSU does not recruit at an elite level any more, thanks to the uncertainty of the coach's tenure, the fact the head coach is pretty much out of recruiting totally, and other things about his managerial style.

But he's still having considerable success in the big picture, so he wasn't going to be forced out I don't think, but the way he managed the last game made staying impossible.
