What a wild game, and a heartbreaker. It was a tough cross-check, and SJ did what they had to do, but I agree that it shouldn't have been that severe a penalty to allow the character of the entire game to be altered like that. Hockey is a tough man's game, and aggressiveness is to be expected, especially in a win or go home game 7. In hindsight, a stupid move by Vegas on that face-off, but think refs over-reacted a bit in calling a major and extending the SJ power play like that. They certainly would not have won otherwise.
Will be a very long off-season.
Why was it stupid? It was an aggressive, playoff move that at the absolute worst should have been 2 minutes but you can see in the replays that the refs had no intention of calling anything. It was only after they understood the severity of the injury that it was called at all. They did not over-react a bit.
And of course, today the NHL apologized. Terrible, terrible call.
Simply because when you are up 3-0 in game 7 in 3rd period, you don't give the other side any extra chances to get back in the game. They could have saved that kind of move for the very end of the game, or better yet, for next season. Without that move, Vegas wins the game, and the series, easily.

But the move wasn't really that bad - it was just aggressive hockey. The only reason it came out as bad as it did was because Pavelski bounced awkwardly off Stastny. Again, look at the refs - neither is raising his hand to signal a penalty...

The finish to put him to the ground and bumping his head after the initial hit should have been a penalty. With the primary hit he still could have braced himself from falling, but the finishing hit was kind of like a defenseless player deal in the NFL.

I'm not against some aggressiveness in sports. My issue is not with the move in general, but as I said, up 3-0 in game 7 of a hard-fought series, the timing of choosing to be that aggressive there is what I find stupid. The game was won basically at that point. All Vegas had to do was stay cool and let the horn sound to end the game. No need for unnecessary potential penalties. I agree, the refs made a terrible call with the major, and I don;'t think he intended it to be as bad-looking a hit as it turned out to be, but have you not heard coaches tell players "hey, guys, remember--no fouls--we're up and the game is almost over--don't give them a chance to get back in the game." or something similar? That's why I said above they would have been better off saving it for next season.Again, without that crosscheck, Vegas wins the game, and the series, and is playing the Avalanche in Round 2. Stupid call by the refs, but the Vegas player gave them the chance to make the call.

Canes up 2-0 in the series. Next 2 games in Raleigh.
It takes both this time of year.
This team post Christmas has been on a tear. They believe in Rod, they believe in themselves, they believe in each other, and they believe they can win or comeback to win in every game.
And think about all of our playoff incurred injuries that have been mounting. I mean damn.... we lose any more guys we will have to hold tryouts in the PNC parking lot to get some bodies to play.

That's true. Frozen pucks take funny bounces on frozen ice.
I remember reading an article where they examined all the major sports and determined that hockey has the highest chances for randomness.
As they say, you need some "Puck Luck".

Yeah, we could have as many as 6 guys out with injuries Wednesday, though I hope Svech and Marty are back.
We definitely got a little lucky last game, but sometimes the hockey gods smile upon you.
So, are the Canes the team of destiny this year? 7 & 0 so far in the playoffs.
Lot of hockey to be played...but...maybe they should start building that new trophy case.

?
We lost 3 to the Caps, that is why that series went 7.
It would be awesome to hoist cup #2 though.... and I think this team and coaching staff have the "it" figured out to make it work.
Made them pull their best player, of the 9 goals he allowed in the series 2 were own goals and 4-5 were bang bang players no goalie in this league was saving. He’ll get credit for the L’s but the guys in front of him did him no favors in the series.
