Warrant for cell phone data
"WASHINGTON — In a major statement on privacy in the digital age, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the government generally needs a warrant to collect troves of location data about the customers of cellphone companies.
“We decline to grant the state unrestricted access to a wireless carrier’s database of physical location information,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the majority.
The 5-to-4 ruling will protect “deeply revealing” records associated with 400 million devices, the chief justice wrote. It did not matter, he wrote, that the records were in the hands of a third party. That aspect of the ruling was a significant break from earlier decisions...."

Roberts wrote the opinion with the 4 liberal members on his side. There were 4 separate dissents.

RE: Warrant for cell phone data
I'm of the opinion that they got this one right. With the advances in cell phone technology and the ever expanding amount of towers we have the capability to locate a specific cell phone down to almost the exact location.

Interesting article in National Geographic about the expanding cameras and face recognition software in use. Talks a lot about London, but similar stuff is going on in NY, Chicago and even to some extent Houston.

I don't really have a problem with the facial recognition stuff as long as the cameras are located in a public space. It's like the plate readers that many departments have on their cars now....when it's out in the open for everybody to see you can't claim privacy.

I guess this covers the TVs as well?
False comfort if you ask me.
Warrants can be very broad.

Yes, but on the other hand, it really is big brother watching you.

On the surface I agree with this ruling, liberal justices or not. Seems we’re running headlong into that Tom Cruise movie.
More than once I’ve thought about walking down to the river and just pitching the damn phone 30 feet deep. Go back to a landline and a post office.
No one needs to reach me at all hours and I don’t need to see the latest beer and pizza you’re having.
I mean, I’m a pretty big deal,
But no, not really...

There was a reason the original Blackberry was called a "crackberry."
When my daughter was young, she saw a woman on the plane with a phone and said, "I like your boss."
(if you didn't get it, the phone was the woman's boss).
