Transfer Lineman
Almost didn't want to make a new post, but changed my mind. I was browsing the Reddit today, and saw a post on the Bearcats reddit that says Miami (OH) basketball center Darius Harper is transferring to UC... to play offensive line, probably tackle.

Now, before you freak out, he was a pretty highly rated O-line recruit coming out of high school:

Sounds like a traditional transfer, vs a grad transfer, so he will sit a year. It will be good for him getting his football legs back under him. Let's hope he can be a difference maker. As mentioned by others in other posts, looks like the staff is really recruiting OL now. I don't think they are prioritizing OL over other positions but I do think they are pushing harder than in the past to sign these big OL guys.

I could be wrong, but if you're switching sports I dont think sitting out a year is required.

RE: Transfer Lineman
Sounds like he figured out his best shot at playing professionally is on the football field. He'll probably have to bulk back up a bit, but hopefully he's got good enough instincts to get back up to speed quickly.

Considering his season debut didn't happen until January, I'm going to guess he was injured to start the season and just wasn't able to work himself back into the rotation.

If you have not participated in that sport for 2 years, you can transfer and immediately play.

He's a 2-year starter, although Rhode Island is a pretty terrible FCS team. Good size though. He must have some skill, because I'm sure we wouldn't waste a scholarship on a grad transfer who's not good enough to be in the 2-deep.

Interesting. Lots of starts (22 in three years including 20 of the last 22 games his team has played) but RIU is a VERY bad D1-FCS team...the last time they won more than 3 games was in 2010...so I'm not sure how to take it. Either way, we need bodies on the OL for depth, and he seems to have a pretty big one, so welcome aboard Dino!

I mean, wide receiver D.J. Moore was drafted 24th overall in this year's NFL Draft and he played for a 4-8 Maryland team that won just 2 Big Ten games.

At left tackle, Boyd isn't at a position to impact his team's chances of winning that, say, a quarterback or runningback would. But he's enormous and can start the next 2 years at UC - that's a huge win for this staff.

He only has one year of eligibility remaining...but I agree with all of your other points.

At 6-4, 305 he's got the look of a "big ugly." I have no clue how well he can play but I do like his playing experience (started in all 11 games at left tackle last year) and he adds to our competition and depth on the OL.

This spring Coach Fickell commented post game that we were extremely thin on the OL, only having 5-6 guys that he saw were going to be able to contribute this year. I don't expect Boyd to come in here and be 1st team All-Conference, but I think he is surely capable of being capable of playing significant minutes and stretching that number from six to seven guys. Who knows, it is possible he is better than expected and gels instantly here.

Ahh thanks. And yea, I wasn't disagreeing with you, just adding more commentary to your original point.
