Where Are They Now? D2 Campbellsville State University
Whatever happened to them? Did they had their name changed? They used to have a pretty good football team. Around the mid 1990s, the officials at the school said they would look at bringing their program to D1. Then, they disappeared. I only see a Campbell in North Carolina. Campbellsville State I think said to be in North Carolina. I have seen a lot of the Universities have their name changed. I just can't find the right info about the school anywhere on the Internet.

Wrong school. That is the private school in Kentucky. Campbellsville State University is a public school. They both had football at the same time. Then you have Campbell which is also a private.

I remember them - they were the Unicorns.

Hopefully, a minimal amount of time has been spent looking for info on a Campbellsville State in North Carolina.

Do you mean Fayetteville State? That's a D2 school in North Carolina. Can't imagine it would ever be a serious candidate for D1, but I guess you never know.

I, for one, would never question DavidSt on the knowledge of non-D1’s. He’s the one who brought Upper Iowa into my vernacular. I would bet on DavidSt knowing of schools the internet has no record of existing.

As a historian by trade, this intrigued me. So here is what I found. The beauty school is in Kentucky, not NC and is part of Miller-Motte a For-profit tech school. It is now closed.

I looked at the Media Guides to three colleges in North Carolina, whose were readily available on the morning of July 4th 2018.
Catawba College - http://gocatawbaindians.athleticsite.net.../fbrec.pdf
Lenoir-Rhyne - https://lenoirrhyne_ftp.sidearmsports.co...rdBook.pdf
Johnson C Smith - https://goldenbullsports.com/documents/2...pdf?id=201

All are currently NCAA DII schools who play football, one is an HBCU, the other a non-HBCU school. On all three, there is no record of a football game against a Campbellsville State University. This is not say that it did not exist, but three schools who were playing college football on the NCAA DII level in North Carolina, did not play a school by that name in the history of their programs.

I'll add in that there is also no mention of a Campbellsville State University in the history of any currently existing D2 conference. Conference Carolinas and South Atlantic Conference are the most likely possibilities. Carolinas has a fairly detailed history section at their website and South Atlantic (began as a football-only conference) is somewhat of a spin-off from Carolinas. Chowan was the first non-HBCU to join Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2009. Peach Belt Conference does not have much of a history of its members that also play football other than North Carolina-Pembroke.

Could be a mixed up by the newspapers? The school that moved up to d1 at the time was Jacksonville State. They could have gotten Campbellsville and Jacksonville State mixed up. Jacksonville State moved up to D1 in the mid 1990s. Jacksonville State's played schools like North Alabama, Carson Newman Catawba and others during that time period. There are some websites that showed Georgetown Kentucky and Campbellsville as a D1 program.

I’ll help out DavidSt some here. It is definitely possible. My local newspaper has definitely made some errors in the past, so I can see that happening.

RE: Where Are They Now? D2 Campbellsville State University
There have been scores for football for Evergreen State, Oregon tech and Radford. Evergreen State was in the 1980s to mid-1990s. I was told they never had a football team. It is possible that they had a club team back then. Oregon Tech's last score was into the mid-2000s. They have not sponsored a team in a long time. It could be a club team as well. Radford was like 2012 when they took on an NAIA school around 2012. They do have a club team. I have not seen much history of how old club football at schools have been around. It is an incomplete list of schools.
