There is serious talk of doing an Ohio version of Indiana's Crossroads Classic (IU, Purdue, Butler and ND) with Ohio State, UC, XU and Dayton. The devil's in the details-- OSU has been dead set against it for decades but it seems that with Chris Holtmann as coach things are changing.

That would be amazing for Ohio. Hope it happens. The Crossroads Classic has been very successful. The Big 5 have been doing it in Philadelphia for decades.

A Kentucky/Louisville/WKU/Murray State Kentucky Series would be cool. As would would a Florida-based series with Florida, Florida State/Miami, UCF/USF and Florida Gulf Coast. Illinois could have Illinois, DePaul, Loyola and Illinois State. Many opportunities for other states to follow.

Or Illinois, DePaul, Loyola and Northwestern

Illinois, DePaul, Northwestern and Notre Dame is the event that would actually sell in the Chicago market if one were ever created.

Illinois and Northwestern hosted a DH’er at the United Center against BYU and Dayton. Dayton fans outnumbered NU. I went to a St John’s-DePaul game at Wintrust with roughly 300 people.

This is the first game where Loyola fever started to settle in (last home game before Final 4 run). Secondary ticket prices were more than Hawks, Bulls, & DePaul combined.

If you start a Chicago Crossroads classic today, Loyola sells better in Chicago than Northwestern/DePaul.

Or Illinois/Wisconsin and Notre Dame/Marquette. Does Marquette have any presence in Chicago?

Sure, that’s today, but it’s about creating a sustainable long-term event. If you pull up ticket prices for any school at their very highest competitive peak, they’re going to be high. What matters more is interest year-to-year.

Regardless, the new 20-game Big Ten conference schedule makes this type of event more unlikely. Illinois is choosing to move one of their Big Ten games to the United Center next year instead of using the UC for a non-conference game.

Illinois, DePaul, Northwestern and Notre Dame is the event that would actually sell in the Chicago market if one were ever created.

Note that the Crossroads Classic works because Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame all have similar levels of power and leverage as power conference members (with Indiana being a national basketball blue blood and ND being a national brand name school overall). Butler didn’t have that status when the Crossroads Classic started, but now they are at the power conference level for basketball purposes in the Big East. The Chicago-area setup I described would be similar. The issue with the Ohio-based proposal is that the power and leverage is so imbalanced between the schools - Ohio State has gargantuan power at a national level as continuously vying with Texas as the nation’s largest athletic department by revenue. Ohio State seems more interested in playing national blue bloods like UNC in Chicago. The other Ohio-based schools get waaaay more out of playing Ohio State than the other way around, which is much different than the Crossroads Classic situation.

That would definitely be true in football.

But in basketball, Cincinnati is historically the best program in Ohio. And Dayton historically has the strongest fan support. And Xavier has been the best program over the past 10-15 years.

Cincinnati and Xavier wouldn't mind playing OSU in basketball, but we have no trouble scheduling schools of OSU's caliber. UC reserves most of our road nonconference games for out-of-region opponents to raise our national brand name (in the past few years it's been UCLA, Florida, NC State, Miss State, Iowa State, VCU, and Butler. We also played home-and-home against Nebraska as part of a football scheduling agreement.).

Between rent, parking and concessions, UC saved over $1M paying at NKU. I would add it gave UC an opportunity to showcase across the river— we have a lot of alums
and fans in N. Kentucky and in the east side of Cincinnati (where I live- it is actually quicker for me to go to BB&T then US Bank).

Makes sense, though it'd be kinda funny if UC played their season at Millett for the hell of it.

03-lmfao Hell, Miami doesn't even want to play at Millett Hall.

I remember going to Miami games as a kid sometimes. It was awesome, that place rocked in the 90s. I went again a few years ago and it was sad to see how that place has fallen apart.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's fallen apart, it's just badly outdated. There are rumblings that we'll announce a major renovation in the next year or so. We have an actual coach now and started winning back some fans towards the end of last season, that never hurts either.

Is Redhawk hockey the place to be now in Oxford?

Was between 2006 and 2015 by and large. Team hasn't been very good lately so interest has waned...

If only Broomball was an intercollegiate sport.... Miami would dominate.
