Video games are not sports. To show how money can be wasted U of Utah is giving schollies in this.

It's not necessarily a waste if esports are a way to attract highly-sought after computer science and engineering majors (which disproportionately stock esports teams). It's akin to how top level private liberal arts colleges have a lot of "country club sports" varsity teams to attract certain types of students.

Personally, I'd put those scholarships in the same category as scholarships for musicians or artists - they are able to profit from their own work in the private sector while adding to the overall culture of the university community and attracting desired students.
