Should be a state issue, at best

RE: It's time to legalize marijuana at the federal level
Why should it be a state issue?
We’ve seen how well leaving marriage to the states worked out.
We have cities trying to confiscate guns, people who get arrested because their gun that is legal in their home state is illegal in another state (looking at you, New Jersey).
This country once fought a war against itself because some states thought that slavery should be an issue left to them.
Yes, I am aware of what the Constitution says, but the federal government has the right to pass laws to protect the people of this country, and to allow people to live their lives in an orderly manner. Interstate commerce is specifically charged to the federal government.
Personally, I’d make it legal nationwide, but I’d ban the smoking of it in public - along with the smoking of tobacco. You can light up in your own home, or in public spaces designed for smoking, and that’s it.

I tend to agree with all of this.

How about keep it illegal but only go after the pushers and those that sell to children. In addition, keep it illegal in public but have a hands off, don't ask, don't tell philosophy for, say, people growing it in their backyards or smoking it on private property. If someone is stopped and has weed on them, but isn't smoking it in public or in a public assembly area, then just look the other way. If someone is smoking dope at, say, the mall or at an outdoor festival where other people are exposed to it then whip out the cuffs.
Seems like a fair compromise, yes ?
Which means it will never happen.

Try writing a law to say that.
