Holy Cross will join women’s Hockey East, men to follow?
Back in May, it was announced that Holy Cross women would join Hockey East, giving it 10 members in women’s hockey. UMass and UM-Lowell don’t have women’s hockey.

That has given credence to the rumor that Holy Cross’s men’s team will later get an invite to Hockey East, replacing Notre Dame. The Holy Cross men’s team has been playing some games in the nearly 15k seat DCU Center in Worcester. If that happens, AHA will be down to ten teams.

Quinnipiac came up as a possible ND replacement as well. I haven't heard much chatter about any expansion in awhile though. my guess is Holy Cross has the edge

Rumor is the Q really likes associating with the Ivies and ECAC because of academic association and doesn’t want to change.

Holy Cross seems to be much better choice than Bentley, which just built a new arena on campus, or American International, which moved to the MassMutual Arena in Springfield, or Sacred Heart, which also moved just moved to the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport and has announced their own on campus arena fundraising.

Expecting AHA expansion when the Holy Cross men are announced as a HE member.

This ND fan wishes that the Irish had stayed in Hockey East, despite it demolishing the competition in the Big Ten in its first season there.

I liked the symmetry of hockey being in Hockey East, with every other sport but football in the East Coast (mainly) centered ACC.

I think that Jack Swarbrick made a mistake with that move, lower travel costs or not.

I thought that Quinnipiac or Holy Cross would be in the league by now.

We have rowing but always liked the idea of adding women's hockey. Holy Cross recently had a large donation and believe the Hart saw renovations as well as an IPF. Always liked Holy Cross from the Celtic legends and especially when Ralph Willard coached them. Football as well as Fitton Field has a nice horseshoe shape and is a steel structure from the 20's and holds 23.5k

This is strictly about women's hockey.

If you know anything about the region (and I do as I have friends from New England and my son went to WPI, and had a girlfriend for awhile who was attending Brown) you'd instantly see why Hockey East makes huge sense for Holy Cross in D-1. College of the Holy Cross is in Worcester (pronounced "Wooster").

under one hour drive
Providence College: 37.4 miles
Boston College: 40.9 miles
Boston University: 43 miles
Northeastern University: 44.2 miles
University of Connecticut: 43.5 miles
Merrimack College: 53.9 miles
under two hours
University of New Hampshire: 90.4 miles

Vermont and Maine are serious drives of almost 4 and around 5 hours respectively.

That league is also a group of schools Holy Cross is happy to associate with. There is nothing more to this.

Second viewing: Men's would make sense too, the same 9 schools, plus UMass, and UMass-Lowell also within 1hour drive.
UMass: 54.3 miles (1 hour 9 minutes)
UMass-Lowell: 45.5 miles (49 minutes)

Way beats Atlantic Hockey with 3 teams near Buffalo, 1 in Pittsburgh and one in Colorado, all requiring airplane flights, while not giving either better competition of profile.

RE: Holy Cross will join women’s Hockey East, men to follow?
Disagree about this only being about women’s hockey. Holy Cross spending on men’s and women’s hockey has been more appropriate for a DIII school. They gave minimal schloarships and played in a raggedy hockey rink.

Hockey East would only approve another women’s team if it agreed to become a full scholarship team and upgrading coaches and facilities. BU and BC so dominate women’s hockey there and it is far from gaining any appreciable revenue, but men’s hockey is another story. HC just built a donated $32 million athletic facility and upgraded their Hart Arena. UConn women were accepted in HE before the men too. The UConn men’s team was a defacto DIII team until they got financially serious about it.

The HC men’s team used to be considered a laughing stock of DI hockey. The AHA had just got an autobid, and the #16 seed HC somehow beat the #1 seed Minnesota in OT, sending the host arena, UND’s Engelstad 12,000 fans into absolute delirium. UND beat a Michigan to complete the evening but are ever so grateful to HC for an easier path to the Frozen Four. UND fans have been big boosters of Holy Cross since that memorable game, buying HC jerseys when we play in Minnesota.

HC hosting games in the DCU Center shows that HC is serious about upgrading their men’s hockey team. Hockey in Worcester should be so much more important than anything the Patriot League offers. Holy Cross turned down a bid to the Big East. They won’t make that mistake again when it comes to Hockey East.

UMass has field hockey to offset men’s hockey. Field hockey is so probably much cheaper.

Imagine rowing plays a big part in offsetting football Title IX issues.

You don't know crap about either Holy Cross or New England. You are talking out your rump even more here than when you tell us Grand Forks is only one turn off away from Malibu beach.

Have an in-law from Massachusetts. Your sure talk up a storm of untruths. One of my outstanding PhD coworkers got his BS from Holy Cross (PhD at Princeton and post doc at Stanford) at the eastern corporation I worked at. He was amazed that I could see the big picture and I left the molecular nuances to him.

Also had a engineering friend from WPI. He couldn’t adjust to the pressure of the employment world, became a pseudo wino, and flunked out of the corporate world. Used to advise him, but he always did the opposite. WPI’s lack of a grading system harmed him as he seemed to learn there to float by with as little accomplishment as possible. He always said that my naive Dakota background would be my undoing, like you do.

RE: Holy Cross will join women’s Hockey East, men to follow?
Your undoing is of your own making.

WPI has had grades for quite some time now. They have been growing very rapidly (will cross the 5000 student threshold soon) and have a branch in Silicon Valley (a number of students do co-op there). Everyone has to do projects, most with outside companies. That is the strong selling point, you come out of school with industry experience. You must have dated information, from a prior administration (I had heard the same story of no grades from another person who know people from there who gradyated in the 90's ... similar to the old system at UC Santa Cruz ... there weer phrases in the evaluations that told you if they earned an A, B, or C in the class I am told, and most HR departments translated to GPA based on that). Also the standards for admission are significantly higher than in the past. But it is interesting that I have heard this same comment now from two older people who knew the school from the past. It has become highly competitive both for admission and for top projects. I guess that was not the case say fifteen years ago.

I did reread the article and look at HEA membership, and it's the same men and women, except the two UMass schools don't have women's. So it would make sense if Holy Cross joined on the men's side once renovations in Worcester are done. The minor league team moved to San Jose a couple years ago -- similar trend as in the NBA G-League where teams want the minor league team close by for call ups and for the coaches to have eyes on players developing without leaving town). Atlantic Hockey has a much more difficult travel, with Rochester, Canisius and Niagara (Buffalo), RMU (Pittsburgh), Air Force (Colorado Springs) all requiring airplane flights.

But I don't see any great realignment from this. The potential is more in the ECAC, but the Ivy League is not interested in it's own Hockey conference, so the 6 members play in the ECAC. Quinnipiac does well, but seems to like being associated with the egghead schools (6 Ivy plus RPI, Colgate, and those D-II schools). Holy Cross seems to fit better.

Worcester is actually pronounced "WOOS-tuh" ot "WHUH-stuh" or a combinatiin of those. Lol...

They should really try to make an effort to get their sh-t together in men's hoops.
