Would they really pick a matchup with no trophy (Northwestern/Purdue) over a rivalry with one (Civil ConFLiCT) that has the defending national champion?

They would pick a power conference matchup between two programs that have played each other for decades and both went to bowl games last year over a non-power conference matchup between two conference programs with little-to-no history between each other and a fictitious rivalry with a created trophy that is probably still in someone's garbage somewhere.

BTW, Alabama won the National Championship Game last year.
Actually Alabama and UCF won. Just like in most years there are more than one national champion. Until they make the playoffs open to everyone similar to the NCAA basketball tournament, mostly you will have years with 2 or more "national champions"
2017 National Champs

Anyone can write a Wiki entry, and anyone can claim a national title. Doesn't mean you won one. UCF didn't win any national title, Alabama, did, this is an actual NCAA web site:

https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/artic...ip-history

Since the two poll era began in 1950, no 3rd party recognizes championships like Colley's, and this is even moreso true from the BCS era on. In fact, that Wikipedia article is in error, since, for instance, the latest Official NCAA Records book does not list Notre Dame's Colley "championship" in 2012, despite Cooley's earlier listing as a "major selector". The Records Book is somewhat inconsistent in that regard, but data in the Wikipedia article is clearly wrong based on the provided citation since ND is not listed in the Records Book as a 2012 champion. My guess is when the 2018 Records Book is released, UCF's won't be there for 2017 either. UCF should actually be removed from that table on that Wikipedia page. That said, they can claim what they want, but it is up for them to justify it and have it be accepted by the rest of the world. Clearly, they are not contemporaneously thought of as national champions in any general or popular regard.

Hahahaha
Who’s idea was it to make a rivalry game and trophy for UConn vs UCF again? It was such a spectacularly stupid idea that The Rivalry is a sports board cult classic! I wish Charlotte and UTSA would start a rivalry game. Make sense? No. Funny? Oh hell yes

Diaco wanted to jump-start the program. I guess the best way he that he thought we could do that is to start a rivalry with the best program in conference at the time (whether they liked it or not..). I get was just trying to fire up the fan base and the players. But he still made us look pathetic lol. But it would be awesome and funny if we got good and this went from a joke to a legit rivaly.

The best thing Diaco ever said was that college football should be broadcast on Nickelodeon so they can appeal to 6 year olds.
