EXCERPT:

Walt Disney Co.’s Bob Iger may not have planned it, but his $71.3 billion deal for 21st Century Fox Inc.’s entertainment assets could be about to reshape sports and regional broadcasting in the U.S.

With shareholders approving the sale last month, attention has turned to 22 Fox regional sports networks that regulators are forcing Disney to sell. The networks hold television rights to 44 professional basketball, baseball and hockey teams, including the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Braves.

Hope it goes to Amazon. Sinclair would be a step in the wrong direction.

These regionals only own rights within very small specific areas. I don’t see how that would work for an internet streamer like Amazon or YouTube. In fact—I’m not sure how you get any economies of scale to work for these regionals. The only thing I see is you could buy college content and share that across all the platforms like Fox did—-but none of the most valuable content from these regionals (the pro team rights) is shareable across platforms. Like the article said, it might help local major affiliates of a network to also own the local regional sports net in carriage negations. So—Comcast would seem to be the buyer with the most to gain from adding the regionals to thier list of properties. Sinclaire—perhaps would be helped as well.

Pretty much my impression, too. I think whoever buys them would buy them all, or most. Otherwise, it makes no sense. I also think some of them would just die if not included in a larger deal.

Yeah to me it probably makes the most sense for NBC to buy them. They could than rebrand them NBC Sports -Dallas or whatever. Then I could see them being a strong player for the leagues rights since the correlation between the cities and teams the league has is pretty good. So some of the smaller games end up here and maybe via streaming as well with the marquee games on NBC or NBCSports. Could work out well.
