Houston, we have a problem
It’s major applesnooz that has me worried and
DC Onofrio is historically an idiot,” see Miami” his game plan is to start each down soft, play far off the line and allow receivers to catch the ball first then react about 15 yards later
Has a strong history of disliking the blitz and just like last year he will put ed Oliver in the least effective position for his talents
he Likes to use linebackers as strong safety’s way too often so stopping the run is not a concern of his, will be ugly more often than not, hope Iam wrong
I look for a new DC in 2019
Houston might win 8 games with offense but zero with defense that will also lose us games
That QB for Arizona “ Tate” is going to have a field day with 10 yard passes right over the middle

RE: Houston, we have a problem
It's bad enough other fans still say it, why go "Houston we have a problem?"

Supposedly we had secondary issues last year. We were reluctant to blitz much because we didn’t have the kind of people we felt comfortable leaving on an island in one-on-one coverage. We have significantly upgraded the secondary via training, experience, and transfers. We brought in the SEC freshman of the year safety and a Notre Dane CB with starting experience to help shore up that secondsry. This year the defense overall is also deeper than it was last year. I think you’ll see a much more aggressive defense that could be the best in the AAC. There is a ton of talent on the defensive roster this year.

Time will tell if last years conservative defense was due to the roster or due to philiosphy. There is no excuse this year for being so conservative.

The above links to a good read about our secondary's past struggles and Applewhites attempts to shore up some of those deficiencies. Last year we ranked 119th in passing yards allowed, and yet we were only 42nd in scoring defense last year. If the secondary improves, which its hard to imagine it doing any worse than last year, we could easily have a top 25 scoring defense. Couple that with what should be a vastly improved offense under Briles, and I think we have plenty reason to be optimistic.

Houston was #1 in the aac is passing TDs allowed (by a huge margin)
Houston was #2 in the aac is rushing tds allowed..
--not sure why you are making it seem like our defense was bad

those 2 stats are drastically more impressive when you considered our offense lead the aac is giving away turnovers (meaning often times put in bad positions, like how tulsa's first 2 TDs in our game vs them started inside the houston 6)

also there is this notion that our pass defense was bad...if you are looking at the fact that we gave up a ton of passing yards alone, it would look that way..
but teams couldn't run on us, passing the was lesser of 2 evils...houston was #1 in opposing qb attempted passes (meaning teams threw more on us than anyone else, because they couldn't run the ball)

look at opposing qb passer ratings, allowed efficiency/rating, TD:int ratio, yds per attempt; they were all top 3 in the aac..im not saying they were elite but they were a lot better than people give them credit for

they were the worst part of our defense, yes, but that was because all of it was great....

but notice last years 2 of our top 5 cbs were injured all season (javian and dj small)...a different 2, had never played in D1 as a DB ever (myres and johnson)..only 1 had experience and he wasnt good (winchester)..and this core held there own all season

our secondary next season could be SCARY: everyone returns, now with experience...added a top 50 recruit (anderson), added a top 150 recruit who started 9 games for ND last year (watkins).

defense isnt an issue...also tate is a runner..he fit perfectly with our defensive strength similar to lamar jackson.....im not that worried about him

With this team some days I feel just like this post and other days I see us easily blowing out our entire schedule. There’s really no in between with what our potential is and then what we have to go off from last seasons mediocre coaching job.

Our defense did take a step back without Orlando. We definitely didn’t get as many sacks, and hurries, and blitz packages and pure chaos which lead to less TURNOVERS which was kind of our thing for a bit.

At the same time, we have ed freaking Oliver in his 3rd year, teams are going to be making their offenses against him which is going to allow our defense to take serious advantage in some match ups when he’s double and triple teamed.

I understand where OP is coming from we had a let down last year and right now it’s hard not to drink the kool aid again this year. But hell I think 10 wins is minimum and one of them from AZ or Tech should be the worst major can do and not be in hot water.

Houston, we have a problem
The only problem with all this is applewhite coaches to lose games not win. We literally lost our bowl game and the Memphis game because of his “great” offensive mind.

Difference is we hired a new “head” coach in Kendall Briles. Ya applewhite may have the title but Kendall is really the head coach.
