You are in the vast minority on the Navy pick (and the only Memphis fan so far to pick Navy). They might win, b/c they're still Navy, and always tough at home.

But I watched that whole game (I pull for them when not playing us), and their D was awful. Hawaii is good, and I'm sure Coach will have them better prepared, but you can't fix slow. Navy O is same ol' good, but the D looks nothing like the D I've seen for years now.

I realize one game is a too short sample, but I have a feeling something is wrong this year on that side of the ball.

This may blow your mind...what if Hawaii is actually REALLY good?

Coach Niumat said: “I thought the two slots were as good of inside receivers as we’ve seen in a long time. They are super smart and know the offense really well. Offensively, that was as good a team as we’ve seen in a long time.”
After three seasons playing with the likes of Memphis, Houston, UCF, Tulsa (I mean a couple years ago Tulsa)...he actually suggested that.

Hawaii looks pretty good, but I couldn’t just brush it off if I were a Navy fan. From the highlights I saw, their QB had all day to throw and their WRs were wide open. They are good, but your secondary got burned bad several times. The only positive you could claim is I’m sure you guys will be extra focused this week to turn things around after taking one on the chin. Your offense is always tough to deal with, but (to beat Memphis) your defense will have to be much better than they showed in game 1.

I don't think any Navy fans are "brushing off" that that was a poor defensive performance. We shift to pessimism pretty quickly, especially about our D against big fast modern offenses.
And Memphis is a pretty good offense. I was hoping it would take a little for new QB to click and week 2 was a good chance to catch 'em early, but things seemed to be humming vs Mercer.
And we now have a short week to prepare for Memphis (commercial flight Sunday, Monday off day).

That said, look at what Coach Niumat said - he is a straight shooter and he didn't say they were ALMOST as good as Lynch/Ferguson/Ward Jr / Flowers led offenses. Or Ohio State in '14 or that Arizona State whipping we took in the '12 bowl game.

As to your specific points, well I see 3 sacks in the stat sheet, compared to two on Ferguson when Memphis scored 30 and passed for 279. Which of your receivers are gonna be Bilettnikoff finalists like Ursua? That dude was for real.

It's hard to get tone exactly right in typed out text. I would say that Navy fans UNIVERSALLY thought "and that's not the last great offense we'll see this year." I think on that two-way street of tone, though, a "TennTruth" Fansided article I saw got under my skin, that if Hawaii did that to Navy, then OF COURSE Brady White would torch 'em.

I picked navy to win, because we have only seen Memphis against a weak fcs team. Whereas navy played tough against a potentially very good Hawaii team. I think Navy will also have more motivation coming into this game combined with playing at home. I think this game will be close, i would even say its a toss up, but im giving the win to navy.

correct me if I am wrong..but doesn't navy usually struggle in the beginning of year? They usually work out the kinks by the time conference play comes around

More nuance now that I've completed my commute...

Yes, we were 5-0, and conversations with other Navy fans was overwhelmingly that each of those games was closer than it had to be (possibly closer than SHOULD have been, but that connotes should have won and very few of our matchups are SHOULD win). We were sloppy and penalized more than the last four years combined and turnover-prone.
But that continued AFTER the win streak: turnovers and penalties vs Memphis and UCF...consecutive false starts taking us out of field goal range vs Army.
It wasn't a case of starting slow or an upward trajectory. Navy has very little margin for error. We need scoring efficiency and to win the turnover battle, and not get penalized or sacked to get behind the chains.
Which makes me raise an eyebrow at comments that our D Saturday was somehow less than it has been. We made Hayden Moore look as good as McDonald did. We were up on Air Force by three TDs and let them take the lead!

I'm actually terrified of the next two opponents. If Tulane enters Ohio State at 0-3, then I could easily see it snowball to 0-6 now that Cincy found a pulse.

RE: ***Week 2 AAC Pickem Thread 2018***
I'm scared to death of this game against Navy. We did better last year against the triple option but prior to that we looked totally lost.

Hawaii was waiting in the weeds for Navy, and they ambushed them. Tired or not from travel, they're going to be ready to play. Home opener for them! Mercer was terrible. I hope our guys don't think they're as good as they appeared to look in game one.

This is going to be a war. I hope Norvell has them ready.

Again, I'm scared to death.

It’s hard to tell in games like this with contrasting styles. I know you guys will come out fired up from last week and b/c you don’t want to start 0-2. We’ll see if that makes any difference. I just wouldn’t feel confident if our defense looked like that (and we’ve played some crappy defense). Honestly, it reminded me of some of our worst years with Larry Porter (where our secondary looked clueless). You guys typically don’t look disheveled like that. We should learn a lot this weekend. Is Hawaii really that good or is your defense that bad? Could be a little of both.
