ESPN: Joe Greene Statue and Indoor Practice Facility @ North Texas
When North Texas Mean Green fans come to Apogee Stadium on Sept. 29, "Mean" Joe Greene will be waiting for them.
North Texas today announced plans to build a statue of Greene, a former All-American at the school and a Pro Football Hall of Famer, at the main gate of the stadium. The statue will be unveiled Sept. 29, before the Mean Green host Louisiana Tech.
"For over 50 years, Joe Greene has made a tremendous impact on our university and the athletic program," athletic director Wren Baker said in a prepared statement. "As a football player, as an alumnus and as a regent, he has made significant contributions to this campus and brought great honor to the Mean Green family. He is one of the greatest defensive linemen in the history of football and he's one of us. We are very excited to recognize Joe's achievements and contributions with this statue."

North Texas getting an IPF, wow, I wonder just how many FCS schools have their own IPF ?
You know Tulsa has their own gazebo and their in FBS, so that’s pretty cool

You know, the 11 yard line thing is nice, but when is Andre getting a statue? My high school's old QB deserves to be honored too.

No. I was serious. Andre graduated with my sister. The guy won a Heisman. A big statue of him in front of TDECU would look very nice. Houston certainly has the finances to make it happen.

Oh, right, Andre Ware. I was hoping against hope you meant Andre the Giant.

Wow, I had no idea Mean Joe Greene played for North Texas. You guys should have had a statue of him up long, long ago. One of the true all-time greats.

I remember the day that the Steelers drafted him.
That's amazing. I just remember him playing and being such a disruptive force in the middle. He was the heart of the Steel Curtain.
In a decade filled with all-time great defensive tackles - Merlin Olsen, Bob Lilly, Alan Page, Curley Culp, Buck Buchanan - Greene was probably the best.

Joe can be seen at most home games. I see him at Apogee at least a few times every season. He is a loyal Mean Green fan, and even stops by practice from time to time. I agree, he should have had a statue a long time ago. I'm just glad we finally have the right leadership in place that is correcting many of our long time deficiencies. Things are improving at UNT.

From the Facilities Twitter account.
Congratulations. I hope USF one day has an all-time great like Joe Greene to honor.
Great timing as well, as you guys are off to your best start in decades so should be a large crowd for the unveiling.
Thanks. Sad to say, we should have honored Greene along time ago. Just glad things are finally happening at North Texas. We have the right leadership in place right now.
As of right now, there are no hotel rooms available in Denton. It looks like we are in for one of our largest crowds for the second time this season.
