RE: Remaining Unbeaten Teams
Percentage undefeated:
ACC - 71%
American - 50%
B1G - 86%
CUSA - 43%
Independents - 50%
MAC - 50%
MWC - 50%
PAC - 67%
SEC - 93%
Sun Belt - 50%
XII - 70%

Interesting statistics: Each power conference is at least 50% undefeated. Each non-power conference is no better than 50% undefeated.

Percent of Undefeated Teams with 1st Loss
Week 0/1: 36.92% (48/130)

Maximum possible Undefeated Teams at End of the Regular Season:
13: We can have one undefeated in each conference plus Notre Dame, BYU, and Liberty.

Week 1 Thoughts:
-It’s always good to have football back!

-We lost about the same number of teams as last year in week 0 and 1. Last year it was 47 out of 130, this year 48 out of 130 (the 130 switched out Idaho for Liberty between the 2 years).

-Great start for the SEC, especially the west. I went into the week thinking the Big Ten East was the best division in college football but would now have to argue for the SEC West. Several good wins this week. Will leave other thoughts on the make-up between the conferences after we get some more data.

-Early in the race for the access bowl spot for the highest Group of 5 champion, but biggest early contenders seem to be what we expected. Boise State and Central Florida both started quite strong and leading two candidates early, but realistically still very open. Opening week showed just how important every week is for this spot. Appalachian State would have been in serious talk for the spot if they could have finished out the upset of Penn State. Coming out with even a close loss though will make it a very uphill battle to get considered even going perfect the rest the way though. They are not going to have anywhere near the chance for that high profile a win going forward (assuming Penn State is decent) and, even as a 12-1 Sun Belt champ, will likely need a lot to happen to get in over the American and Mountain West champs as strength of schedule will likely hurt going forward.

Week 2 Thoughts:
-If I counted correctly, there will be 21 games between undefeated FBS teams next week.

-Games of note to me for various reasons are:
1. Clemson @ Texas A&M: This will shape the narrative of the season a lot going forward. If Texas A&M wins, the SEC West will be a monster and talk of 2 teams from the SEC getting in again will intensify. If Clemson wins, talk of them being on a collision course with Alabama again will be there and continue until one of the two losses.
2. USC @ Stanford: Wow this feels early. Winner of this will be one of the favorites in the PAC-12. There will be absolutely no margin for error for the looser of this the rest of the way.
3. Georgia Tech @ South Florida: This is South Florida’s toughest nonconference game and winning it will leave them in good position for access bowl spot heading into conference play in a few weeks.
4. Kansas @ Central Michigan: In a few weeks I will start up the winless list and Kansas has been on that list a long time many of the past few years. This is probably the game they will be the smallest of underdog going forward (6.5 point underdogs). Only other possibility I believe for a smaller one if things remain how they look now is week 3 at home vs. Rutgers.
5. Michigan State @ Arizona State and Colorado @ Nebraska: Some Big Ten vs. PAC-12 challenges that were probably originally scheduled during the brief Big Ten-PAC-12 scheduling alliance that broke down. Winning these kind of games helps give conference playoff bowl contenders a chance down the road.

Remaining Undefeated Teams:
ACC: 10, American: 6, Big 12: 7, Big Ten: 12, Conference USA: 6, MAC: 6, Mountain West: 6, PAC-12: 8, SEC: 13, Sun Belt: 5, independents: 3, total: 82

RE: Remaining Unbeaten Teams (Updated Through Week Two)
I'll post this here one more week. Next week will probably post new thread even if this keeps going as will probably be adding another list or two.

Teams with 1st loss Week 2:
Arkansas State
Texas A&M
South Carolina
Rutgers
New Mexico
Ball State
Southern California
Pittsburgh
Kansas State
Florida
(Liberty)
Nevada
Northwestern
Georgia Tech
Georgia State
Air Force
Nebraska
Memphis
Iowa State
Charlotte
Southern Mississippi
UAB
Virginia
Arkansas
Fresno State
Tulsa
Brigham Young
Michigan State

Percent of Undefeated Teams with 1st Loss
Week 0/1: 36.92% (48/130)
Week 2: 34.15% (28/82)

Maximum possible Undefeated Teams at End of the Regular Season:
11: BYU and Liberty were eliminated as possible undefeated teams this week. We can have one undefeated in each conference plus Notre Dame.

Week 2 Thoughts:
-The Clemson-Texas A&M game lived up to the billing. Had that gone differently, the cry for 2 SEC teams in the playoff bowls would likely have started hard and fast given the conference’s strong start. Clemson winning keeps them one of the favorites though and was very much needed for the top ACC which has most other top programs down a bit it seems so far.

-This week emphasized again to me how much small differences in games can affect perception. Last week, Penn State was very close to losing to Appalachian State. If they had lost it, combined with Michigan’s loss to Notre Dame week 1 and Michigan State’s to Arizona State week 2, the Big Ten would not have been in terrible shape, but would have had a bigger potential for issues. There is a lot of talent in the east division (Wisconsin is the serious playoff bowl contender in the west), but having 3 of the biggest 4 with losses before conference play (4 of 4 if OSU loses to TCU next week) would have made the likelihood of one of them winning the division and potentially the conference with 2 losses far greater. Given that we still do not have a 2-loss team making it in the CFP era (which would have stunned me when this system started), that would be very significant. As it stands though, Penn State looks good again and there is a bit more margin for error.

-Overall good week for the top teams from Group of 5 conferences looking for the New Years 6 slot. South Florida beat Georgia Tech and Central Florida and Boise State rolled in games they outmatched their opponents. Houston is looking more serious again this year with a dominating win vs. Arizona. Eastern Michigan stays alive for this thing with a win at Purdue. Plenty of others in running too.

Week 3 Thoughts:
-If I counted right there are 12 games between undefeated teams next week. Biggest ones seem to be:
1. LSU at Auburn: LSU rolled Miami (FL), last week. Now we get to see if that will be a trend or if Miami was just over rated a bit to start.
2. Boise State at Oklahoma State: Big test here. If Boise State wins it, probably will be favored rest of the way. If lose it, that would leave Hawaii as potentially only undefeated team left in the Mountain West.
3. Ohio State @ TCU: If TCU wins, that puts them solidly with Oklahoma as the teams to beat in the Big 12. If Ohio State wins, keeps them toward top of national rankings and leaves most of Big 12’s hope in the Sooners and maybe West Virginia (although TCU probably still in if won rest of way).

Remaining Undefeated Teams:
ACC: 7, American: 4, Big 12: 5, Big Ten: 8, Conference USA: 3, MAC: 5, Mountain West: 2, PAC-12: 7, SEC: 9, Sun Belt: 3, independents: 1, total: 54

One of Clemson and Syracuse will lose this week.
One of Ohio State and Penn State will lose this week.
One of Notre Dame and Stanford will lose this week.

If the others remain unbeaten, we are down to 18 undefeated teams, I believe.

And honestly, if Penn State wins, I cannot see how they shouldn't be considered the #1 team in the country right now with who they have played.

That App State overtime win will hurt big. Although App State is a pretty strong team

You think NC State is going to lose to Va at home? It's not yet time for NC State's WTF loss. That happens in late October or early November.

Yes. I think Virginia will beat NC State and a few other ACC programs this season.

Appalachian State against Troy for the SBC championship. Troy beats App. State for the SBC would give Boise State an edge.
