Ther was a time when the Supreme Court only had two clerks. One for the Chief and one for everyone else. Now, I think everybody gets four to themselves. This is what enables them to hang on until they’re 85, 90, etc. The only thing they really have to do is be physically present for oral argument. If they started skipping that, I think there would be a public outcry. But as far as doing research, reading other judges’ opinions, or even writing their own opinions... they don’t have to do any of it if they don’t feel like it.
