Can SMU, TULSA or TULANE ever be good at football again?
This is an honest question. Are these three excellent private schools just to difficult to recruit players, especially given that they are surrounded by schools with much lower admissions thresholds.
SMU and TULSA have had two highly touted coaches, Montgomery and Morris and Tulane has a guy with a stellar reputation for winning. Given the amount of money all three schools have been willing to pay for coaches with nothing to show for it raises the real question of whether or not they can compete in football at this level.
I am curious as to what the fans of these schools think about what the question I posed here. TUlsa , SMU and Tulane are great schools with loyal fans. I just wonder if its possible for them to have consistent winning seasons any more.
Would the AAC ever ask any of them to leave and replace them with other schools that dont have such up hill battles in recruiting?

Yes...Tulane and SMU are in recruiting hot beds. Tulsa isn't that far from recruits either. Gotta get the right coach and be able to energize the local fan base.

Tulane and Tulsa were bad additions to the conference. The league should have looked at Marshall. Ideal scenario would have also included Army.
North: UConn, Temple, Cincinnati,Army, Navy, Marshall
South: UCF, USF, ECU, Houston, SMU, Memphis
I believe this would helped the conference separate even further from the other G5 leagues. It would have created a north division that would sit in the old big east footprint, which would have UConn and Cincinnati.

I like what I saw yesterday even in defeat and we have the #1 recruiting class in the conference. Sonny finally sat Ben Hicks and our freshman qb moved the ball.
Look at what Chad is doing in Arkansas.
Funny from an ECU fan.

Marshall’s success is reliant on NQs. No way they can get the athletes when they have other options.

SMU’s last P5 win was in 2011. ECUs was last week.

It wasn't that long ago that Tulsa was winning...
Willie Fritz has won at every stop so far. Unless he just forgot how to coach (unlikely), he is probably still figuring out how to recruit to a top notch academic university.
Sonny Dykes has only coached three games and has played as difficult a schedule as anybody. (UNT looks to be the real deal after blowing out Arkansas yesterday.). Give him a little time.

Tulsa is definitely weird. They have won a lot for so many years. Tulsa fans what do you guys think the problem is?

I think all coaches with the "Montgomery" surname need to be replaced.

Our biggest problem so far this season is shoving our heads up our own butts. In all 3 games we've had at least 3 turnovers on offense and at least 6 or 7 penalties. This team is not well disciplined. Whether that's coaching or immaturity I don't know.
Also, against Texas we missed 3 FGs and dropped 2 or 3 TD passes. We should have beat a team with far superior talent.
We've put ourselves in a hole in each game this year. These guys just do not know how to win yet.

I am in education and have tremendous respect for Smu. My question was a real one, as your school, Tulsa and Tulane have high admission standards. There has been a huge shift in competition for players and now low threshold schools around these 3 schools are attracting talent. I am just wondering if this means having successful football programs is possible for these 3 schools going forward. No disrespect meant to these 3 schools or their fans.

Seriously dude? Recruiting is just having coaches kids want to play for.
Look at SMU basketball.
