Exactly.

I'd never knowingly or willingly buy a car with a made in China engine in it anyway.

Had a 74-1/2 (lol) Super Beetle. Bought it for 700 bucks, redid everything on it basically, upholstery, put in a bumpin' stereo, could do 90% of whatever work it might need myself for next to nothing and it was a great surf mobile, great gas mileage, great in snow, and it could really move believe it or not.

Drove if for a couple years then sold it for 1300. Loved that car.

Economy is incredible right now, attempting to nitpick is just sad.

I had a '69 VW. I loved to drive it but not in the summer or the winter. Hot in the summer, no AC and cold in winter, heater sucked. But, I still loved that car...one of many that I've owned.

I drove a 71 Bug... actually the car I learned to drive in.

Yep, no A/C at all.

The heater wasn't bad. Granted, it was either off or on, but it heated up the car.

That was the ONLY car my parents ever bought brand spanking new off the dealer's lot.

We also had a VW pop up van. My favorite vehicle ever. We laid the back down put the kids on t and rolled. Heater and a/c sucked, got just enough heat to defrost front window, kids had blankets. Great times.

Increases in American made car prices would primarily due to UAW.

First car was a 70, took the entire car apart and rebuilt it. Never should have sold it.

Have a 73 super in the garage.

Meyers Manx in the works.

RE: New Car Prices to Rise
In reality, the price of a car has been stable for a long time. Now trucks are a completely different story.

I remember buying my wife a new Camry in 1994, just a base LE model. It was $16,800. A base LE now, 25 years later, is right at $24,000. So about a 45% increase in 25 years, or about 1.5% a year compounded, less than inflation. Now, when you figure in all the things that are standard now on a Camry that weren't standard in 1994, you have actually had deflation of car prices.

On the flip side, I bought a new F-150 4-wheel drive in 1997 for $24,000. Same truck today is well north of $48,000 with the same options.

I don't understand why some think a little inflation is a bad thing. In a very strong job market that is seeing wage growth it is natural and the only thing that can continue the upward trend. I'll take a strong economy with a little inflation over a weak economy and price stability any day.

RE: New Car Prices to Rise
Someone called the house tonight asking for me to answer some questions for a survey. Usually it's like, click, hang up, but I went along for some reason and most of the questions were about buying autos. Federal mphs, how much would I pay, what if price went up to $6.50, and so on. They said results would be on the radio in the next few days. Believe I skewed the results some.

If they didn't like your answers they may very well just exclude you from the sample.

In addition, if you're in the market for a new car, you probably should get to a dealership soon, because prices are going up.

Trump's latest round of tariffs on Chinese imports will add costs to more than 100 car parts — a 10 percent levy on everything from tires and brake pads to engines and batteries — that go into cars made and sold in the U.S.

"It's going to be felt by Americans and it's going to be a big deal," said Peter Nagle, senior analyst at IHS Markit. "Tariffs are taxes on consumption. Eventually costs will be passed down to the consumer. This will drive vehicle costs higher. It also includes a lot of body shop equipment."

Thanks Obama!

A 2016 Heritage Foundation analysis estimates the Obama fuel economy mandates increased new car prices $6,800 more than the pre-2009 baseline trend, and eliminating the more aggressive standards would save 2025 car buyers at least $7,200 per vehicle. As my colleagues detail, “Economists and engineers accurately predicted that the [model year] 2016 standards would hurt consumers by at least $3,800 per car.”

So Trump has already stepped in to prevent future car prices from skyrocketing. But the current increase has more to do with the ObamaEpa 2016 regs.

https://www.heritage.org/energy-economic...-cars-more

Quote:The EPA said the Obama rules would add an additional $2,340 to the overall ownership costs of a new vehicle. Given that the annual cost to own a car is around $8,000, an additional $468 per year over five years for a more efficient car or truck isn’t a deal breaker for most buyers.
The EPA refuted its own bizarre justification for rolling back fuel efficiency standards

And now for some math. I drive roughly 26k miles per year. If my car gets 35mpg and fuel is $2.8999 as it is today, my annual fuel costs are $2,153.55 year. If the standards are implemented and my new car gets just 45 mpg (the Obama mandate is to 55mpg by 2025), my fuel costs drop to $1,675.48 per year. So a savings of $478 each year. So if I keep my car just 5 years, I would save $2,390 in fuel costs which is greater than the additional $2,340 I paid.

This post makes no sense. You clearly picked the car you are driving today. You could have just as easily picked to drive a Prius, Fit or even a hybrid, but you didn't. There was probably a reason that you didn't (the first two look like Sh!t and the third are extremely expensive). That reason will still exist in the Obama utopian future.

Instead of posting this drivel, why don't you just apologize to UofMstateU? You challenged him to back up his statement and he did.

No, I asked for a link to Bullet's statement in his post, not U's. Bullet hasn't posted in this thread since. I don't owe anyone anything here! And I wasn't "challenging" his post anyway, but rather asking for the source of it so I could read it and we could discuss its veracity. Just as I would expect anyone else to do of me.

And the cost of hybrids already have the fuel savings built into their added cost.
