Correction-"Overeducated" people are increasingly identifying as Democrats. People who live in the real world and don't get PhDs who are educated are still heavily Republican.

54% of college graduates lean Democratic compared to 39% that lean Republican. That is a complete reversal from 1994.
63% of those with post-graduate degrees lean Democratic compared to just 31% that lean Republican.

Temporary "Trump" effect combined with increasing minorities.

Yes, I just said that.

Professors aren't paid to teach. They're paid to do research.

If you're a mediocre teacher and an elite researcher, you can work at Michigan.

If you're an elite teacher and a mediocre researcher, you're lucky to get a job at Central Michigan.

I happen to enjoy the teaching side of my job as a professor, but I'm repeatedly warned by senior professors not to spend too much time on it.

When half of your colleagues at work are highly educated immigrants (as mine are), you tend to frown on Trump's anti-immigrant attitudes.

The ban on people from 6 countries was counterproductive. The only people it hurt were the pro-American people from those countries (including my very good friend who is a dual Iraqi-Canadian citizen, who was told by his employer that he was not allowed to attend an elite conference out of fears that he might not be allowed back in the USA). It also was a great recruiting tool for extremists.

Sometimes I wish someone could put a leash on Trump and restrain his dumber impulses. But if Trump didn't do stupid things like that, he wouldn't be Trump and he wouldn't have won in 2016.

Those stats mean that people with ONLY a bachelors are slightly Republican.

Your average college grad who doesn't get a masters is either a STEM/business/nursing/agriculture student who will get a job and vote Republican. Or they're a non-STEM grad who will work at McDonald's and vote Democrat.

I think the numbers have skewed because people who get worthless undergrad degrees are now getting more masters degrees than they used to. Also teachers are forced to get masters these days, and teachers are majority Democrats.

People with terminal professional degrees (doctors & MBAs especially) still tend to vote Republican, but they've become a minority among terminal degreeholders.

No, that's not what this said.

Believe it or not, the world is full of educated people who aren't college professors.

My father used to say "Book smart, common sense stupid".

Seems to apply perfectly here.

RE: Professors overwhelmingly Democrat
A large number of physicians vote Republican, particularly surgeons. Pediatricians, Geriatricians and Psychiatrists most often vote Democrat.

People who work in the finance and insurance industry tend to lean conservative.

Its hard to find non-minority accountants who are Democrats.
Just as its hard to find Republican social workers.

I worked on a college campus for nearly 2 decades. There are conservatives in academic and administrative positions but they fear retribution for their conservative opinions so they keep their mouths closed or talk amongst those who are like minded that they trust.

That's why polls lean Liberal most times. Us conservatives like to keep the opposition guessing and then we slam them at the voting booths. We like to scream "SURPRISE" when we win and see the faces on the MSM. LOL

I would to if my parents were supporting me at 26. I'd try my best to be a professional student...aka a Socialist supporter.

Professors are even more Democratic than I had believed.

"...Democrats dominate most fields. In religion, Langbert’s survey found that the ratio of Democrats to Republicans is 70 to 1. In music, it is 33 to 1. In biology, it is 21 to 1. In philosophy, history and psychology, it is 17 to 1. In political science, it is 8 to 1.

The gap is narrower in science and engineering. In physics, economics and mathematics, the ratio is about 6 to 1. In chemistry, it is 5 to 1, and in engineering, it is just 1.6 to 1. Still, Lambert found no field in which Republicans are more numerous than Democrats.

True, these figures do not include the many professors who do not have a political affiliation, either because they are not registered at all or because they have not declared themselves as Democrats or Republicans. And, true, the ratios vary dramatically across colleges.

The faculties of Wellesley, Williams and Swarthmore are overwhelmingly Democratic, with ratios at or above 120 to 1. At Harvey Mudd and Lafayette, the ratios are 6 to 1. At the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, it is 2.3 to 1; it is just 1.3 to 1 at West Point.

But despite the variability, none of the 51 colleges had more Republicans than Democrats. According to the survey, over a third of them had no Republicans at all...."

That's because Republicans actually go out in the real world, get jobs and deal with other adults all day instead of kids.

Well, there's that and tenure. With tenure they can spout all nonsense they want with basically no fear of being fired. They try that in the real world and they'd be out on their collective a$$es in no time.
