There's a serious talent divide in the Big 10 between top shelf teams and the lower half of the league-- maybe more than any other P5 league. Using Ohio State as the barometer, here is their all-time wins vs. their conference mates:

Indiana 73-8-4
Minnesota 44-7
Northwestern 61-14-1
Wisconsin 59-18-5
Nebraska 3-1
Iowa 46-15-3
Michigan State 31-13
Purdue 39-14-2
Penn State 17-8
Illinois 68-30-3
Michigan 48-46 (OSU has won 6 in a row)
Rutgers 4-0
Maryland 4-0

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that most of these are simply overmatched by the Buckeyes historically, presently and likely into the future. I would argue that the divide has probably only gone stronger as many of the wins these teams have over OSU took place in decades past when OSU was not as strong or when demographics were different and some of those teams had stronger programs.
Nah. Its a lot more balanced than it was in the 70s or 80s. Urban Meyer has put Ohio St. on a higher level as Saban has at Alabama, but coaches eventually change.
Yet, Ohio St. only has two Big 10 titles since 2010. Michigan St. and Wisconsin have won more in that period. Since 2000 only Indiana and Minnesota among the long time members haven't won a Big 10 title.

Agreed.

Now, I do think there are some P5's that will never sniff a playoff berth while it is the current plus-one model.

I think you watch too much of the ESPN talking heads and aren't paying enough attention to what is happening in reality.

Well Illinois, Purdue, and Northwestern have all won the Big 10 since 2000 (NW and Purdue tied in 2000, Illinois won it outright in 2001). The landscape hasn't changed that much since then.

Kansas did come within 1 game of going to the Big 12 championship game in 2007. Finished with a 12-1 record and BCS Bowl victory.

Nah

PAC 12: OSU Washington State have won in the recent past and will do so again. Just rare not never

SEC: Maybe Ole Miss can get one

ACC: could see PITT winning again

Big 12: Maybe K State could get hot again

The rest I agree with

All of them can, if they make an unbelievable hire and the stars align anything can happen. But it'll probably take local competition to suck to make things happen - I doubt IU will ever win the Big Ten unless both Purdue and Notre Dame are on a real downward trend, K-State being bad with Ron Prince is one of the reasons KU was able to rise up momentarily.

Vanderbilt’s the only P5 team I can’t imagine seeing win a conference title in my lifetime. (I’m 27.)

If you’re talking about programs I can’t imagine seeing win a national title that’s a different story. That would include about half of power programs.

Eleven of these teams have one their conference, or at least their division since the turn of the century. Four additional ones (OSU, Egg bowl teams, Arizona) have made BCS bowls since then. The only three of these who might belong on this list in terms of having not done anything, are Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Iowa State. And Kentucky could win the SEC East this year.

UNC was in the ACC championship game just three seasons ago and came fairly close to winning against the eventual runner up

I don't see why someone would say any of the teams could "never" win a conference title. It's not outside the realm of possibility that a few of these teams listed (I'm looking at the Wolfpack in particular) could win this year. Even Kansas, with a good hire and some lucky breaks, could stumble into a championship at some point in the future.

Beside, everyone knows the correct answer to your question is ..... Michigan07-coffee3

First step is to start winning their out-of-conference games, that is, not being destroyed by Buffalo and losing to perennial FBS cellar-dweller Eastern Michigan. (Let's not even talk about winning the Big 10 until they can beat bottom G5 teams.) Then you start beating that bad Big 10 teams. Then you start unexpectedly pulling off upsets vs middle-tier and top-tier programs and recruits start noticing you. It's doable, even for Rutgers. Iowa St was like them several years ago and are clearly on the upswing.
