The top 4 are a lot closer than most people think.
Alabama is really good but they haven’t played anyone of note yet. A&M looks okay but that’s it. I still think they’re #1 but the gap is a lot closer than most people think.
Look, I'm retired with grown grandchildren (just no greatgrandchildren yet) and I knew Bear Bryant. I've watched 5 decades plus of college football. And I'm telling you as much as I loathe the Tide, this is the best, and the deepest, Alabama football team that I've seen in my lifetime.
So far this year Alabama has had every game in hand by halftime. They've started playing the bench 3 deep in the 3rd quarter of every game. They have a national championship game experienced QB on the bench and they have in his place on the field the most talented passer I've seen at Alabama since Namath and the most mobile QB I've ever seen at Alabama. And his passing accuracy is phenomenal.
So toss in an all American defense that sees little action in the 2nd halves of their games and understand that it goes 2 deep at every position before the talent level drops off and toss in a decent kicker and a good punter and they have practically no weaknesses to exploit.
It actually reminds me quite a bit of the Nebraska teams that had Rimington at center. They are a monster that hasn't had to get out of 2nd gear this year.
Clemson has depth issues on offense. Ohio State isn't as diverse offensively. And Georgia lacks experience. But all three of those teams would be competing quite well for a championship in most years. They all have weaknesses.
The weakest part of Alabama this year is their place kicker and he's still much better than average.
But we'll see. All things have to be won on the field. And I've watched at least 2 games for each of the next three I mentioned and there is a visible difference.
I'm just waiting to see how they look against L.S.U.'s Defense. But I don't expect the game to be close because of the lack of depth for L.S.U. and L.S.U.'s offensive deficiencies.
