He'll have significantly better choices than KU.

The rumor is the Cleveland Browns are interested, as well as being on the short list to replace Urban Meyer if he "retires for health reasons" again.

Jim Leavitt built USF up from nothing.
Spent many years at K-State before coming to USF.
He would be an excellent choice. IMO

An interesting name to consider for head coaching vacancies would be Bo Pelini. I believe Nebraska's salary buyout ends this year (or recently ended). He could look to make the jump back into FBS.
To be fair, I thought Wannstedt was a good coach. He did better at Pitt than any coach since the early 80s.
Also, it was pretty ridiculous that the Wannstache was pushed out of Pitt at the end of a season where he tied for 1st in a BCS conference.

I really enjoy Wannstedt as an analyst. He's has great insight, along with an entertaining personality. I never thought he would be a college coach for very long, though. He had the tough fortune of following Ditka in Chicago, followed by Jimmy Johnson in Miami.

The problem Wanny and Dave Stewart had at the time was they couldn't beat UC. It really bothered the boosters of those schools to finish behind us.

But Pitt beat Cincinnati in the year Wannstache was fired.
The year before he was fired, he won 10 games. It was Pitt's first 10-win season since 1981.

True, but the die was cast in the seasons prior. He actually was not fired, but "resigned" to take a new position as a special assistant to the AD. However, instead of taking on the new administrative role he joined the Bills coaching staff.

Yes, or Art Briles. They might have to go the second-chance route.

Central Michigan won 3 MAC titles with 1 top 25 finish in the 4 years preceding Dan Enos.
The Chippewas then won 3, 3, 7, 6, & 7 games under Enos.

The problem that Wanny had was with the AD. Petersen came back to Pitt after destroying Nebraska's program and did the same to Pitt's. Petersen didn't hire Wanny and he wanted to rule the roost. Wanny didn't accept that and Petersen fired him. He resigned in name only. Wanny was treated very poorly by the administration, but he is a Pitt man through and through.

A solid hire for Kansas! I hope they have real grass for him to chew!

It's no longer "reportedly". It's a very interesting move. I'm cautiously optimistic, and while he's no kid, our new coach is still junior to his rival to the west by 14 years.
I was also impressed by how Long and Beaty handled Beaty's situation. He may be in way over his head but he's a good guy who loves KU, so I'm happy to see a dignified process take place.

The kind of hire that would be more for the BIG than the Big12-2. Maybe KU knows something what might happen in the future.
