4/8 team MTE's- basketball
I think one thing we're going to start to see in the real near future is a movement away from these 3 day 8 team MTE's. Going more to the 2 day/4 team MTE's....

I mean right now Alabama is losing to Northeastern in rd 1 in Charleston. If they do- they would next see Ball State- and then on Sunday would see probably one of App St, Wichita St, or Davidson.

now if this was a 4 team MTE- they would have played Va Tech 1st, and then either Purdue or Wichita St/Davidson(whichever one was invited). Much better for guaranteed SOS.

The hosts/sponsors need to make money. But adding teams like Cal State Fullerton does water it down.

NKU and Oakland are hosting 4 team round robins the next two weeks. Hoping to make both (NKU’s arena is beautiful...will catch UK/Vandy FB games Saturday).

but how does having Northeastern playing Virginia Tech now in the semifinal really help the hosts/sponsors?

Also- there are enough 4 team events that I wouldn't be surprised if we see more and more the stronger programs going to those instead of the 8 team events.

The likes of Northeastern and Cal State Fullerton don’t help the hosts/sponsors make money. But they might find a weak #8 worth the cost for a strong #5 and #6.

ESPN operates five 8 team tournaments, including the "Charleston Classic". It's programming for ESPN channels. An 8 team bracket gives them 4 more games for TV compared to a 4 team bracket.

I get that, but if I were a coach of a prime program, unless the field was something like Maui, I'd be looking almost exclusively at those 4 team fields.....

Of the top 10 P5 programs in KP's ratings right now- only 3 are playing in a 8 team tourney. Duke and Auburn in Maui and Florida St in Orlando. 6 others are in 4 team tourney and then Kentucky is in a round robin type of one.

You normally get two RPI drags at home in the 4 team MTE with two good games at a neutral site.

Yeah. The problem is that you're starting to see a lot more where the 8 team event is 1 RPI dreg and then 2 good games at neutral site. So get the extra revenue from home game.....

It's interesting that 7/10 top 10 teams have the 4 team event this year.
