McNeese State & FBS? Pipe Dreams
Quote:The time has come.
McNeese athletic director Bruce Hemphill and president Daryl Burckel need to get on the phone and start making calls.
It’s time for McNeese State University to make the move to the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Now I’m not saying it has to be immediately. I don’t even think it should be immediately. More to the point, I don’t think it can be done immediately. There are some issues that need to be taken care of before the move can be made.
The NCAA requires a school to sponsor a minimum of 16 intercollegiate varsity sports. That includes a minimum of six all-male or mixed teams and a minimum of eight female teams. Currently, McNeese sponsors 16 teams (men’s and women’s track and field have the same rosters, but indoor and outdoor seasons count as different sports). So check that one off in favor of McNeese.

RE: McNeese State Looking at going FBS
um, this isn't McNeese looking at going FBS, this is a McNeese columnist opining they should go FBS. Pretty big difference.

This thread should be retitled to something less misleading, as it's an opinion piece and not actually an indication of the school's intent.

Too much time spent looking at guns & bikinis instead of reading the article.

RE: McNeese State Looking at going FBS
In defense of Crimson Phantom, this is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone from McNeese advocating joining FBS. For years, McNeese refused to even consider such a move, so this is quite a departure from the norm.
However, problem is that there are 5 FBS schools in the state of Louisiana already, and more people have been leaving Louisiana than coming in from what I’ve been hearing. For state funding purposes, the state of Louisiana only has four FBS programs, with Tulane being a private university, so perhaps from that standpoint it could work. I don’t know though.

Yup - and in a few years DavidSt will be referencing this as proof McNeese is on the AAC's radar

Misleading for sure. I thought Louisiana was having money issues
They already have - LSU, LaTech,Tulane, ULL, ULM for FBS football.

It's amazing how quickly #FakeNews spreads around CSNbbs.
As I indicated to Crimson Phantom elsewhere...
No.
McNeese is not looking at going FBS. This is a relatively new columnist to the area who is trying to get folks talking about going FBS. McNeese had their shot at staying I-A just over 30 years and opted against it.
I have a hard time believing that in Louisiana where schools are being cut more and more by the government each year that a school like McNeese would be able to make a move like this.

Louisiana is having money issues, but Tulane doesn't get state dollars. They are a private university.

NoDak is the columnist. He moved from the Tennessee hills to a small town in Louisiana. This is part of the Great North conference plan.

Suffice it to say, this is one poster who has especially good reason to believe that President Burkel won't be doing anything to draw any extra attention from NCAA for awhile. Just fwiw.

Maybe when McNeese State merge with another school, but this one would be a keeper. The schools that would survive are McNeese State, La.-Lafayette, La.-Monroe, La. Tech, New Orleans, LSU and Northwest La. State. I think that is what I read. They got backlash since all the HCBUs would be no more.

RE: McNeese State Looking at going FBS
If we get so far down the list of likely FCS schools moving up that McNeese St makes it, we will have passed the tipping point where the P5 and a few others break away and set up their own division.

This isn't "someone from McNeese", it's just a sportswriter who covers them.

RE: McNeese State Looking at going FBS
Poorly written, rambling article and he got zero quotes from anyone involved with the athletic program, now or in the past. He could have easily called or emailed the current head coach at ULM, Matt Viator, who was the head coach at McNeese from 2006-2015. McNeese is also his alma mater.
Viator could have explained the challenges he faces at ULM, the likelihood of ever getting an invite to the Sun Belt, the expense of moving up, the stadium enhancements that would be needed, the Title IX requirements of a move up.
McNeese only has 8,000 students. Lake Charles, while a nice little with city, is really humid, it rains a lot and there are plenty of mosquitos. Not a great place to watch a football game.

New or not, he;s just a writer. Read the article--it's all his opinion. Nothing is sourced to anyone in the ADs or President's office.
"Now I’m not saying it has to be immediately. I don’t even think it should be immediately. More to the point, I don’t think it can be done immediately."
Not a big deal--if you edit the title, everybody's happy. You're dealing with a crowd that has been through several rounds of realignment, which were accompanied by hurricanes of unsourced BS.
"McNeese State Should Go FBS" or "Will McNeese State Go FBS" Maybe include the news source. (I can't remember the name).

RE: McNeese State Looking at going FBS
Out of the FCS Southland schools that could beat a blue blood football program would be McNeese State. They almost upset Nebraska. But they should have stayed in FBS which would have meant they would be in SBC before La.-Monroe.
