USM AD more than likely taking the AD position at ECU
Pirates’ AD search zeroing in on Southern Miss’ Jon Gilbert
https://nsjonline.com/article/2018/11/pi...n-gilbert/

This would be great news for USM fans. Many feel he really hasn't done jack since he took the job a few years ago. Gave Hopson an extension prior to this season after doing absolutely nothing. Gilbert has been wayyyy too patient with Doc Sadler who just lost AGAIN to NAIA William Carey in basketball. Many USM fans are crossing fingers that he leaves.

Good move for him if he takes it. Ecu is positioned well for upward mobility.

ECU fan here, I wanted to wait until it was official before asking but since a thread has already started I wanted to see what USM fans think of Gilbert? It appears from the OP he wasn't thought highly of which is concerning. I know in ways ECU and USM are similar institutions so my hope was it would be a smooth transition. Also rumors float that it might be a "package deal" so to speak with Butch Jones as coach.

Anyways curious to hear thoughts such as strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks!

This is pretty odd. Why are they hiring him? What good attributes did they see?

Is he good with budgets? ECU has some monetary issues at the moment.

Guy wasn't at USM long enough to make a clear judgment. This all rides on which coach he brings in and how successful he is. The HC position at ECU right now is a better opportunity than many realize, in part because the bar has been set low. If someone can even turn us back to what we were under Skip and Ruff then they are an instant Greenville legend at this point.

Then you are hiring the right AD because he loves mediocrity. Considering he gave our football coach and basketball coaches the max years contract by Mississippi law while both have been average at best. I'm wondering why we still have Joye Lee McNelis as our women's coach going on 14 or 15 years now with no NCAA tournament appearances.

This is great news. He brought absolutely zero to the table. He made some head scratching decisions and I can't wait for his replacement. Good luck ECU!

Then he will prolly go with the safe bet in bringing in his and his buddy Dave's boy Butch Jones. I really want him to go after JMU's Mike Houston. Not sure they would bite but ECU could afford to double the salary of Neal Brown or Scott Satterfield. Some fans are even calling for Holtz to come home.

No matter how you slice it, this is the most important hire in school history and the new AD's legacy is riding on it.

Thanks for the feedback, certainly a little disconcerting that many are happy to see him go. Unfortunately I remember the same thing when we hired Compher and many NIU fans were happy to see him go. Here's hoping that he will be a pleasant surprise and at least get a coach that wins.

It's not that he's done anything awful, it's just that he hasn't really done anything. Maybe at ECU he can make something happen, but he just kind of occupies the spot right now. There hasn't been any fundraising initiatives, nothing done toward basketball, he's extended poor and average coaches. It's just confusing.

Though from what he's said in private, some of that is because of leadership above him and not necessarily him alone.

I am in multiple giving groups at USM and have been able to give back in different ways to the university that prepared me for life. I love Southern Miss.
That being said, I smiled when I read the original post. I have seen no one as AD who I felt was did less at USM. I have some friends who love him, but I don't see it and hope my friends at ECU have the best of luck with him. Perhaps it just wasn't a good fit for him at USM. Good for USM!

Judy Rose is still available if this deal falls through. You can't beat 28 years of AD experience!

She's waiting. Give her the call!

I don't feel like he'll be the John Thompson/Scottie Montgomery of ADs for you guys but at the same time I'd be shocked if he ended up being a Ruffin McNeill/Steve Logan (over .500 winning %) type. Probably something in between those.

I'll pile on...

I didn't understand Gilbert giving Hopson an extension at the beginning of the season, when Hopson has done nothing to earn such a reward. Why not wait till the end of the season?

I also saw Gilbert just complaining about cash and putting no plan in place to generate more. I'm told there was a very slight increase from FB ticket sales, but our attendance also dropped by 20+ percent.

Nothing he did at USM has been impressive. Not sure what impressed ECU enough to hire the guy.

That said, he could have sucked more. So, there is that.

I said this earlier in the week. FAU did us a great favor by hiring our Defensive coordinator from us last year, and now ECU is taking Mr. do nothing from us as AD. Thanks guys!
