What do the expect?, they are FCS.

But the occasional FCS Championship is SOOOO much better than being a low-level G5!

I will say this is a bit of a normative question. There is a ceiling. If you asked me which the fanbase would prefer (FCS championships or a perennial losing team), I think it's a no-brainer that you take top of the pile FCS as a fanbase. That calculus changes with an FBS program that does bowl with some regularity, etc. But the point is that what is good for attendance/fanbase and what is good for a coach are not necessarily always aligned. A coach is going to jump to an FBS school, especially if he thinks that they have the resources that he can achieve some success. That's also a no-brainer. The same with G5 to P5.

The only major exception to this rule (in football) that I can think of is Jimmye Laycock at William & Mary, when he accepted the Boston College job and then changed his mind and stayed at W&M for about 40 years. I can't think of many other examples, but I'm open to them if people can think of them.

Coaches will always take next step to FBS if their dream is to win a national championship which is most all Head Coaches at moment. Then our schools get used as springboard to position themselves to go to school that can win a championship. Currently we are blocked from every winning a title in football, at least theoretically basketball you have a chance to win title...

Well, it’s hilarious how they’re bashing CUSA over there. I have rarely seen such hypocrisy. First they are saying FCS playoffs > Bowls and how our bowls are crap and they are perfectly happy. Then out of the other side of their mouths they’re saying that they keep losing coaches to garbage FBS schools and they should move up.

Ok, which is it? They want to move up and take part in that of which they claim is worse than FCS? If so, they are clearly full of shite and FBS by far is better (as WE all know). Or do they want to continue losing coaches and being a medium sized fish in a small pond? Can’t have it both ways.

When we were 1-AA, the playoff scene was all well and good (and we were excited about them each year), but moving up was so much better and we were much more excited about going to a bowl than we ever were in the 1-AA playoffs. Oh, and the money was much better as well.

They can’t understand that because they don’t know the feeling of being 1A.

Their fans also had a **** fit when Charlotte, ODU, Ga So, Apple State, and Liberty moved up to FBS.

ECU just fired Mo, I have to believe they will take a run at Houston. The timing is just way to Coincidental. And as I’m listening to the radio typing this they just said that that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

I read this as a done deal, could be wrong.

ECU just offered him. App may be left out in the cold if Satterfield announces a move after this week.

Any time a coach says “I’m focused on beating xyz team right now”, there’s stuff going on behind the scenes. Charlotte may still get him.

"Sources to @SBNation: The deal between Charlotte and JMU head coach Mike Houston isn’t done yet, as the ECU opening could draw Houston to the Pirates."

If it was a done deal, hate to say it, you guys would being having a press conference today. What is odd is that yesterday he said he’s spoken with UNCC twice and is interested in the job. But, spoken twice no official deal or announcement yet almost 24 hours later. Oddest of all was the ECU BOT meeting that happened with no announcement of anything and rumors that Mo could get a 4th year after the meeting. Then at the same time the Houston/UNCC story blew up and now less than 24 hours later ECU has announced Mo is fired when all signs pointed to that word being made after the NC State game. IDK what’s going on but it seems rather odd the timing of things and that the deal for UNCC and Houston is not official yet as he hasn’t gone to Charlotte to sign contracts and have a press conference yet.

Whatever the case he just got a lot more leverage in negotiations with whomever he signs with.

Yep. Houston just made himself some extra money from someone.

ECU can probably throw him a little more money but he is 3 hours closer to his parents on this side of the state.

Ooooph. If UNCC loses Houston to ECU I'll actually be upset for them.

However if App does lose Satterfield to UL or GT then I wouldn't feel so bad getting Houston for ourselves.

What’s gonna be interesting is how much more money can ECU actually throw him right now. There are some major budget issues currently with the slide of the football program and financial mismanagement by Compher. I don’t know how much we can offer nor do I have any idea about your budget.

I can be up front and tell you we've been told 900k was the target. Take that as you will.

Per our AD, we are looking somewhere in the $900K-$1M range.

Since when do JMU fans stay in this realm of reality? They are going through some serious 5 stages of grief coming to the realization that a new program in CUSA is an upgrade from the FCS champions

I feel bad for them. Some of them actually convinced themselves that they were on par with CUSA programs. This was just reality smacking them in the mouth.

That’s roughly what we were paying Mo. ECU was paying Skip a good bit more than that back in 09, but we were also far healthier financially then than we are now. Going to be facinating to watch.
