Duke University bowing to demands will remove name of Klan leader from its building

Carr also commissioned the "Silent Sam" Confederate statue on UNC's campus that was toppled by student activists earlier this year. During the dedication ceremony of the statue, Carr bragged in a speech that he once whipped a black woman so bad "her skirts hung in shreds."

Is Duke University doing the right thing by removing a disgraced benefactor from a place of honor or are they erasing history to appease a vocal minority?

Discuss below.

If he is the reason Duke exists, they need to honor him in some way--or just shut down the University. It doesn't have to be on this particular building.

Yep. Shut down the school, and give the school and funds back to the family and say "no thanks". Anything less would be extremely hypocritical.

Yep, way too late. They took the money. It is Julian Carr's school.

Duke and any other entity should give back the cash value of what they were gifted by Carr. Changing the name of the building is kinda weak, although I agree if he was a notorious KKK member. Memorials to "Confederate" should be left alone imho.

Does the family care?

From a practical perspective, so long as that family member has the statue or the building name, attention will inevitably focused on the misdeeds of that family member

At least in NC, it's against the law to take away the statues. I heard driving to work today UNC-Cheat is proposing building new building to house the statue. Some sort of history building or something along those lines.

No. 0.0000000 fricks given what those morons do.

Washington DUKE

"He enlisted in the Confederate navy, and served in Charleston, SC, and Richmond, VA, until his capture by Union forces in April 1865. After a brief stint in a Federal prison, he was paroled and was sent by ship to New Bern, and from there, walked 134 miles back to his homestead."

Frick those ignorant morons.

They are truly idiots of the highest order
