I think the ACC would've had the pick of the litter over the XII. After the departures of Colorado, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Missouri, the XII lost a bit of its luster and was viewed as unstable. That doesn't mean a school would've turned down the XII - in fact, Louisville publicly announced it wanted into the conference - but it seems the ACC would've been the preferred destination.

I am of the opinion the ACC should've done what it could to keep Maryland. I also believe Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Boston College should be kept together but that is a personal matter. In our timeline, with Maryland and Rutgers going to the B1G, the ACC was left at 13 (including Pittsburgh and Syracuse). I believe the ACC should've gone to 14 with West Virginia. Not an academic peer but neither is Louisville. If they wanted to go to 16 and Notre Dame wasn't an option, then Louisville and Cincinnati.

For the XII, if West Virginia was not an option because the ACC had them, then go from 8 (after the 4 defections) to 12 with TCU, Houston, Louisville, and Cincinnati; to 14 with Central Florida and South Florida; and to 16 with Memphis and BYU (football-only).

Both conferences would've been more stable. If the ACC went to 14 and the XII went to 16:

PAC, B1G, and SEC would be as-is today.

ACC
North: Miami, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Boston College
South: Florida St, Georgia Tech, Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina St, Duke, Virginia

XII (or XVI)
