RE: Conference RPI Rankings
(01-17-2019 11:38 AM)GoldenWarrior11 Wrote:  Long-term, for the PAC, they need to follow the model that the SEC had when they hired Mike Tranghese as a basketball-consultant. He encouraged programs to hire name coaches, pump a little bit more resources into the basketball-side of things, and schedule tougher OOC. I believe he was a big reason why so many SEC schools began to hire "proven" name coaches like Avery Johnson (Alabama), Rick Barnes (Tennessee), Ben Howland (MSU), Tom Crean (Georgia) and Cuonzo Martin (Missouri) in recent years. Toss those names in with guys like Calipari, Mike Anderson, Bruce Pearl, Frank Martin and Billy Kennedy, you have a pretty successful collection of conference coaches. The improvements have definitely shown.

No disrespect to the current PAC coaches, but very few have them have had tournament success at their current schools. Sean Miller, Dana Altman and Larry Kryskowiak all have, but the rest have not. Ernie Kent, while successful at Oregon, has not been competitive at WSU. Similarly, Oregon State has been a door-mat for the conference for quite some time. Mike Hopkins appears to be doing good things at Washington, I expect them to continue progressing into the future (unless he gets poached by Syracuse when Boeheim inevitably retires), as has Bobby Hurley at ASU (although I could see him returning to the East Coast in coming years). However, Stanford (Haase), California (Jones) and UCLA (N/A) are all dramatically underachieving. A number of those schools really need to invest in proven-name head coaches to help get PAC Basketball back on track.

It would be pretty cool to see someone like Earl Watson hired at UCLA, or Jason Kidd at California, as that appears to be a growing trend in college basketball these days (Penny - Memphis, Ewing - Georgetown, Mullin - St. John's). Frankly, I think the WCC has some really strong coaches (in addition to Mark Few) that could do well at a number of those programs. The WCC has done a great job at getting fits for their basketball programs (Randy Bennett, Mike Dunlap, Lorenzo Romar, Herb Sendek).

I would agree that there are some Pac-12 schools that need to upgrade the head coaching position. Romar got fired at UW and Sendek as fired at ASU. They both had some success, but not enough. Bennett is not leaving St. Mary's and Dunlap has to win at LMU to attract interest.

UCLA needs to get this right. Money will not be the issue, but they have to get a coach that is good with the media, personable and can convince the players to play for the front of the jersey, not the back. Earl Watson would not be my choice. Watson needs to prove himself at another school before they take that risk.

Pac-12 basketball is a mess right now. But they are still recruiting talent. Oregon and UCLA were in the top five in basketball recruiting in 2018. Arizona and USC are the top two in basketball recruiting for 2019. In looking at an NBA draft projection for 2019 on NBA draft.net, the Pac-12 had ten players projected to get drafted, four in the first round. The AAC had zero players projected to get drafted in 2019. Obviously, that can change, but the Pac-12 has talent. Maybe they need to hire some AAC Head Coaches.

well, I just looked and 10 days after you posted this, the gap is now .0074 and growing daily. In the next week or so, the gap between the AAC and Pac 12 will be greater than the gap between the Pac 12 and the MAC(currently .0093 and shrinking).

And if Temple can beat Penn on Saturday- that gap between the AAC and Pac 12 will grow even more.

so looking just from yesterday
AAC---P12 .0077
P12-MAC .0082

I think the question may wind up being, will the Pac 12 be able to hold off the MAC for 8th?

so an update for a week later...
AAC-P12 .0087 gap

P12-MAC .0051 gap
P12-WCC .0092 gap

And that's WITH Temple losing to Penn.

It's possible that the Pac 12 could finish as the #9 conference this season in RPI.

so looking here about 2 weeks later....
AAC-P12 0.0119 gap

P12-WCC .0032 gap
P12-MAC .0042 gap

I think I'd project P12 to finish 8th probably based on the way things are going...

Oh and today finally the AAC passed the Pac 12 for 6th in Ken Pom.

As of 2/8/2019, according to realtimerpi.com,

Big 12 is a runaway No.1, then No. 2 to No.4 are almost identical. There is a significant gap between No. 4 and No. 5.

No. 1 Big 12 0.6032

No. 3 SEC 0.5788
No. 4 ACC 0.5784

No. 5 Big East 0.5734

No. 6 AAC 0.5481

Note B1G's numbers are biased, they started conference play early to finish early for early conference tournament. When the other four power conferences are still playing, others' RPI will move ahead of B1G.

Power 7 basketball leagues. All or nearly all of the at-large bids come from these seven leagues.

Nah, the AAC is still a non-power/tweener. It is in the top 6 way more because the PAC is having a turrible non-power year than because it has improved.

If you look at realtime RPI, there is a big gap between the #5 Big East and the #6 AAC. At least as for now.

SMDH. There's so much wrong and asinine in what you just stated, but I've learned to overlook you. However there is a reason why the NCAA tournament committee moved away from the RPI and to the NET but think you already know why and just felt like saying something silly. 07-coffee307-coffee3

RE: Conference RPI Rankings
For those that say that it's just the Pac 12 sucking....

last years raw ratings
#5 Big Ten .5523
#6 Pac 12 .5510

this year so far-
#6 AAC .5495

So sorry but no. Last year the Big Ten and Pac 12 were viewed as power conferences with no questions. The AAC is right there with their rating.

I think it's safe to say that the WCC will pass the Pac 12 this year- it's just a matter of time now for that. The MAC is less clear- but with 7-8 games left for both leagues, it's very possible that they do as well....
