1995-2000 A-10 basketball divisions
Just curious if anyone knows: In 1995, when the A-10 went to 2 divisions for basketball, why did La Salle go to the West and St. Bonaventure to the East?

To give the western schools an opportunity to play in Philly? I really don't know.

The “East” and “West” divisions probably should have been called “North” and “South”. I presume the Philadelphia schools were split to keep George Washington form being on somewhat of an island in the West/South.

LaSalle was part of the MCC before joining the A-10 if I remember right maybe had something to do with Dayton and Xavier.

1995 MCC (11)
LaSalle
Cleveland State
Wright State
Xavier
Detroit
Butler
Loyola
UIC
Northern Illinois
Milwaukee
Green Bay

1995 A10 (9)
UMass
Rhode Island
St Bonaventure
Rutgers
Temple
Saint Joseph’s
George Washington
Duquesne
West Virginia (who knew WVU’s in-league Pittsburgh rival was..Duquesne?!)

A10 lost WVU and Rutgers to drop to 7.
A10 added Fordham, LaSalle, Virginia Tech, Xavier, & Dayton for 12.

Maybe Xavier, Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, & Virginia Tech demanded Philadelphia access? No idea.
