From my home, the stadium is too far. While the staff does a good job saying, "Hi", is is a long day to get there, watch the game, and get home.

Who has 6 hours to spare?

I had google Chicago Fire just to know what sport was being played... even then it pulled up some TV show...

maybe sports is just oversaturated in general... there are teams in all the major sports that the vast majority of Americans just do not care about... teams like the Chicago Fire... New Orleans Pelicans.. OKC Thunder (I think)… Columbus Crew... etc..

This is absolutely a contributing factor!

A lot of good points made in this thread. Economic factors beyond the realm of sports, high costs of attendance, competition from other forms of entertainment, rules changes within the sports themselves (especially NASCAR), poor game day experiences - all of that adds up. I'm also somewhat reluctant to give any more money to an alma mater whose mission seems to be creeping farther and farther from genuine and substantive academics with every passing day, and I suspect I'm not the only one who feels that way when it comes to college sports.

The beginning of the end is with their screw job to ESPN and CBS, then the boring cookie cutter tracks with some closed down like Pikes Peak Speedway, Toyota, drivers trying to kill others on track and in pits and so many other things. NASCAR took a hit when Dale Earnhardt SR died at Daytona.

Talladega Nights an entire movie mocking NASCAR might have made a contribution to the decline.

Blame Will Ferrell.

I'm there with you on this. It's beyond insane to see the gobs of money spent on college athletics. I get what the proponents of these insanely big athletics programs will state, i.e. "it's all about the marketing"... However, the marketing is truly a sham argument given the wealth of information readily available on colleges and the strengths/weaknesses of each wrt areas of study. In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter if your efforts entices guys like Danny Dickweed to apply? Does it really matter if your school rejects 60% of the applicants instead of the historical 40% - especially if the overall quality of the applicants is only incremental at best?

I think the future of post high school education is changing. I have a kid who just went thru the college selection process and is waiting for high school to end in order to move on with her life. Her biggest criteria (in no particular order) were:
  • Money the school will offer to her to attend
  • Cost of attendance
  • Location (how close to home in her case)
  • Department rank in her chosen field of study

Sports and "campus atmosphere" did not factor into her choice. I'm willing to bet that more kids are thinking of school along the lines of my daughter.

The "evolution" of how kids pursue post high school education will have long lasting effects on college athletics programs - including attendance. JMHO.

Meh, lots of people choose schools because "they have big time football there" when all other things are equal. It matters.

Reality is, there are probably 100+ FBS schools that COULD run in the black if they so desired. No they wouldn't be spending millions on coaches and wouldn't be felling Amazon rainforests for exotic wood for their lockers and they'd use the bus more often traveling but they could be run in the black.

I think rules and conferences be thrown out, merge the FBS and FCS conferences and allow the top large D2 schools to move up. Central Oklahoma, SW Oklahoma State and NE Oklahoma State could do better if they have schools like Tulsa, Missouri State, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts and Oklahoma to play. Adding Oklahoma Baptist, East Central Oklahoma, Arkansas Tech, UAFS, UCA, Harding and Missouri Southern could make a good regional D1 conference with Central Oklahoma and the other Oklahoma schools.

Sounds like it would be a tie breaker and be weighted lower as opposed to other factors. You have cost of attendance continuing to climb coupled with people revisiting the value in getting a bachelor degree to wrestle with. I'd be surprised if either of those issues takes a back seat to the strength of the athletics programs in today's world.

Kids are on their smartphones not on TV.

They are more concerned about job prospects after graduation I agree.

Of course it's not the only factor but it's still a big deal, though.

I graduated from college this decade and can't tell you how many people I heard this from, both instate and out of state. It matters a good bit.

I spent roughly a year with a kid going through her options and deciding on where she wanted to go to school. Her primary criteria was 1) Location, 2) Quality of the program she's choosing to study and 3) How much money she can get out of the school in the form of scholarships. Athletics wasn't even a factor.

I'll grant you this - my kid may be odd. She has a very good idea regarding areas of study that will be in demand into the future and she's very aware of the value of money. However, I think this type of thinking is becoming much more common given the numerous anecdotes of meeting an "over-educated barista"...
