Hope the B1G doesn't go after Val Ackerman, the Big East would miss her.

I have a hard time envisioning that. Val has zero B1G ties from her background and, probably most importantly, doesn't come from a football or network background either. Her background was basketball, first and foremost, which is why she has been so successful for the Big East.

I would bet on someone already within the B1G getting the nod and his successor.

The current commissioners of the SEC, MLB, NFL, and NBA were execs within the organization who were recommended by the outgoing commish.

This is probably correct. It's a full on corporate operation now. They will want somebody with media credentials and executive chops. I imagine somebody in their early 50s with the hope that he'll go for the better part of two decades before they have to look for another (if he works out).

My guess is it'll be an unknown to us now.

Please don't hire Karl Benson or the bumbling fool parading as the PAC 12 Comissioner.

Chuck Neinas or David State

Chuck is the obvious choice, but David State is intriguing because he says he will take the job for free if they rename the conference the Big David State Conference and add NIU and Toledo which David has reams of data to support their inclusion

Are those reams on 1-ply or 2-ply?

Northwestern's AD, Jim Phillips, Brad Traviolia, the B1G Deputy Commissioner and COO, and Mark Murphy, the Green Bay Packers President/CEO, I would think would all be the favorites to replace Delaney, IMO.

Neinas was a hero for the Big 12 during their 2011-2012 crisis period, he righted their ship when it looked to be sinking.

But, IIRC, he's at least 85 years old now. Doubt he'd be interested and vice-versa.

Murphy is a little old, he'd be 65 when the job starts, likely would only hold it for a half dozen years -- he'd be more a fill to get the next contract and then hand it over sort of guy. The other two are the right age to have 15+ year run as Commissioner. I think they are more the mold of who might get picked. Traviolia however was a wrestler and not a big revenue sport. Given the Larry Scott (Ivy League Tennis) experience, I would think the B1G would want somebody with revenue sport focus.

I am thinking we should be looking for an outsider around 50-55 years of age with media, revenue sports, and executive experience.

Val Ackerman was a protege of Delany. Would be an interesting choice.

Neinas is as old as Delany.

I wish I was as optimistic. Delany and Ackerman served together on the USA basketball board a few years back and he has praised her for her leadership several times. It's probably fair to say they are friends.

And while she doesn't come from a network background, she does come from a *commissioner* background, which is probably a lot more important. She's been an actual commissioner of an NCAA conference for 6 years now. Delany was hired as B1G commissioner while he was commissioner of the OVC. There's only a handful of other people who fit that bill. That's a lot of experience in dealing with all the issues that arise for a commissioner, including relations with media partners. And she's a corporate lawyer, the NBA vice president of business affairs for 7 years, that probably involved a lot of TV stuff too.

She also has loads of experience and contacts in the DC - New York corridor, which the B1G has obviously emphasized trying to develop these past several years.

The biggest knock against her is as you say her lack of experience with football. Hopefully, that will ultimately keep her from being hired, because really, looking at her resume, it's the only knock against her. Other than that she's pretty much a perfect candidate.

But I won't be surprised at all if she is interviewed by the B1G for the job.

Nope, way older. Delany is 71, Neinas is 87.

People forget that Chuck Neinas was the Big 8 commissioner (that tells you how old he is right there) back in the *1970s*.
