Bank a hotel away from downtown Memphis. You can land great Hotels outside downtown Memphis. Give me a minute to think. You might get a great deal.
I have something out east from downtown that isn't bad and will drive down. Can pay alot of parking for downtown prices of 2-350/night. Traveling down by myself this trip so I don't require something over the top.
What part of town if you don't mind saying?
I240/Poplar Not close but easy drive and more what I wanted to pay for a decent place

The Hampton on Poplar @I240 isn't bad, Corky's BBQ just across the street, & the Blue Plate Cafe is just across the street too - a good breakfast spot (one on Court Sq too, if you stay downtown).

I forgot to mention Holiday Inn Downtown Memphis. You wouldn't need to rent a car at this hotel either if you just want to attend the games and meander around Beale St. by foot, etc.
There's a TGI Friday's on the floor level if you just want a convenient meal or drink right out of your room. The breakfast buffet I've only eaten once, but the manager said it's just reserved for the hotel customers (we got lucky and squeezed in off the street).

You're staying in the Overton Park District. Enjoy the games. Plan on Uber or a cab back to entertainment celebrating on Overton Square. It's like a mini-Downtown square atmosphere. Bars and restaurants will be bumping.

If you're hanging around after the games for dinner. Just hang around for dinner. Try a dinner at Memphis Rendezvous Memphis locals, we'll argue until we're blue in the face what the best hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint is in Memphis.
The Rendezvous in downtown Memphis will provide all your ambiance you are looking for as an outsider tourist.

I-240 & Polar is NOT at Overton Park/Square but it is pretty much downtown #2 area. lots of businesses and restaurants servicing them. Breakfasts are good at Blue Plate Cafe and Another Broken Egg. good dinners at Seasons 52, Capital Grille, Earling Jensen's, Owen Brennan's and maybe the best Italian in town at Frank Grisanti's inside the Embassy Suites. all the big fast chain places are in the area but the best burger will be Huey's a little further west on Poplar. the original Corky's is also just on the other side of I-240 and it remains good, but you would drive past a Central BBQ on the way and I wouldnt do that if I were you. downtown is probably a easy 20 minute drive from this area

You're correct. I've read too much and got confused. I worked there for 5 years on Ridge Lake Blvd. The Marriott or Hilton there is where all of our business associates stay while in Memphis. I believe there's a Hampton just West of the Interstate off Poplar.
A block or two to your East and West from there you have restaurants galore, but is NOT a walking-friendly location. There are sidewalks on both sides, but it's your typical Interstate section.
You'll probably want to grab an Uber from that location because it's a very busy location on Poplar Avenue.
That said, a very popular street hosting a local Pub is just a couple blocks just West of Poplar/ I-240 is Brookhaven Pub & Grill. If you're on the West side of I-240, you can likely walk to it. It's where they host the weekly coach's show on the local radio for Memphis sports.

if you are looking for something different to do Saturday after the games are done, you can walk over to AutoZone and catch a Memphis901 FC match against Loudoun United FC
at 7:00 PM. they play in the USL. if you have families with you, i recommend the Pink Palace Museum on Central https://www.memphismuseums.org/pink-palace-museum/ and for little ones, the Memphis Childrens Museum https://cmom.com/ is at the Fairgrounds, all easy to get to. this is the 1909 Dentzel Carousel Pavillion built to house the carousel furing a 2 year complete restoration

RE: Official AAC Tournament Travel Thread
i worked downtown from 1978-1992
it has really changed since 1992, lots of growth
new apartment buildings, restaurants and sports venues
places i like
pearls oyster house (south main), last time the wife and i were
there we got gumbo and red beans and rice, its a little spicy
majestic grill (main), a converted old movie theater
westy's (north main), good burger and fries, hot fudge cake to kill you
blue monkey (south main)
central bbq (next to civil rights museum)
if you have never been to memphis, you have to go to the peabody hotel,
just beautiful

Two questions on local eateries: one, is Ching's Wings good and, two, what about D & L's Catfish Shack on Mendenhall? I got the rest of my eating tour planned out, just need to narrow things down.
Chings is my favorite I’ve tried in the city. Plus if you are a tiger fan it’s decked out from floor to ceiling with mostly tiger sports memorabilia.
I would recommend Wing Guru for wings. 2 locations. Honey Suicide are the best I've ever had.
I might also suggest trying The Second Line for a terrific modestly priced lunch. The po-boys are very good and the beat your ass shrimp are incredible.

What is the bag policy at FEF? Are you able to bring in a small over the shoulder bag? On the long days of the tournament with so many games, I have usually take a small over the shoulder bag with my phone, reader, some medicine, phone, phone charger. Is that allowed?

Absolutely. We have NBA walk through security. Dont have food, drinks, or alcohol and you will sail through. Lots of alcoholic beverages are available in the arena.

If you dont mind spending money, Iris is award winning. Expensive but man it is good. Will need reservations. Kelly English restuarant and he does it right.
Felicia Suzanne is also really great with a nice relaxed bar.
Beer only, try hammer and ale. Full bar for adults, Alchemy.

scroll down to "prohibited items" & "security procedures" all that stuff sounds fine as long as the bag isnt bigger than the allowable
